Friends of Library to sponsor Daniel Island Harvest Tour of Homes - 2012
Sep 19, 2012 - 9:27:21 AM
The Friends of the Daniel Island Library will sponsor the Daniel Island Harvest Tour of Homes on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012. This event, now in its fifth year, is a fund raiser for the Daniel Island Library.
The Friends of the Library is a nonprofit organization of volunteers who work with the Berkeley County Libraries to promote library services and their contribution to our community. Mary Ann Solberg and Vicki Danziger, co-chairs of the annual house tour, describe this event as a real win- win for Daniel Island. “We bring many people to our Island and introduce them to beautiful Island homes. And we provide an opportunity for people to meet local authors while supporting our wonderful library at the same time,” says Solberg.
Since the Harvest Tour of Homes began in 2008, it has raised over $40,000 for the Daniel Island Library. Proceeds have been used for such items as additional computer workstations, furniture for the library and its much-utilized community meeting room, early literacy resources, a parking lot book drop, additional shelving, a display case for Island artifacts, story hour materials, and additional books and materials for the collection. Last year’s tour has also made possible the creation of “Book Club Kits” – multiple copies of titles used by the many Daniel Island book clubs. Because of ongoing budget cuts these purchases would not have been possible without the Tour of Homes.
The Fifth Annual Daniel Island Harvest Home Tour again features four varied homes. Located in four diverse neighborhoods, the tour homes will provide guests the opportunity to view a home in a new neighborhood on the Wando River and a townhome in the established Center Park neighborhood. On the Daniel Island Park side, there is a classic custom home on the golf course, and a spacious home for a young family.
As another feature of the event, each home will host a local author who will be signing copies of his or her books. This year’s authors are Brad Crowther, author of Charleston mystery The Ninth Man; local executive chef, Frank McMahon, author of Cool Inside: Hank’s Seafood Restaurant; Nicole Seitz, author of Lowcountry romance Beyond Molasses Creek; and children’s authors Megan Waldrep and Melissa Nelson, authors of Spice and Little Sugar, a story about big and little sister rivalry. The authors will sell and sign their books and will be on hand to lend a “literary” feel to the tour.
The homes will be open from 1-4 pm and may be visited in any order. A map to the homes is provided in the ticket package.
Tickets cost $20 payable by cash or check in advance at these locations: Island Expressions and Sun Trust Bank on Daniel Island and at Zinnia in Mt. Pleasant. Tickets can also be obtained from House Tour committee members. In addition, tickets will be available the day of the tour for $25 at the Daniel Island Library, 2301 Daniel Island Drive. All proceeds of the Harvest Tour of Homes remain on the Island to enhance the Daniel Island Library and its resources.
