Vote Yes for School Referendum
It has been amazing to look back and realize that it has been over six years since my husband and I decided to move our family to Daniel Island from Massachusetts.  One of our best decisions! We have seen the island grow especially at Daniel Island School (DIS).
I will not forget the first day that the school opened. It had only been two days since we drove in with the movers and our daughter was just a little girl walking into Kindergarten.  DIS opened its doors that year to about 500 students. Today, DIS educates about 1300 students.
It is important that our community understand why we need a high school. Hanahan High School, in two years, will definitely not be able to take our growth. In the last six years, DIS 8th grade class has grown from less than 40 students to about 100 students last year. However, in two and a half years, our 8th grade class will be over 150 students since this class was the original Kindergarten class when the school opened 6 years ago. These numbers are much larger. Hanahan High School is already overcrowded. They will have a major facility problem. Our community desperately needs a new high school to support our growth.
In addition, our Daniel Island community continues to grow with apartment buildings behind Greystar apartments, Smythe Park among other areas showing new construction. All this new construction and growth means more families and children.
We also need an additional school building to support our growth. Putting aside what kind of configuration this building might have, we have to admit that we need a building to keep up with our growth. Therefore, I encourage you to vote Yes for Schools on November 6th so we can have the funds to build the appropriate facility.
This referendum proposes the construction of five new school buildings (two for Daniel Island/Cainhoy area) and improvements to 24 existing schools. Please support all our schools! If you have questions regarding the referendum, I urge you to look at the information on the Berkeley County School District website.
Lastly, I want to thank all who attended Anita Zucker’s speaking event this week regarding the Yes4Schools School Bond Referendum. She discussed the importance of having safe school facilities to improve education for our children. As a former educator and current chairman/CEO of InterTech Group, Zucker understands that today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce.
As a mother of a child at DI School, a community leader and an active volunteer, I urge you to vote Yes for the School Bond Referendum on November 6th.
Gisele Woodward,
Daniel Island

More on election vitriol column
Steve Ferber’s column in the October 11 edition of The Daniel Island News was refreshing and clear.  Maybe in a perfect world voters would understand the issues and use that information to fill important public offices.
