Boy Scouts and Trident
United Way
Recently, Trident United Way, representing Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties, made the decision to cease their funding efforts to the Coastal Carolina Council Boy Scouts of America. While Trident United Way is an upstanding organization and helps with many local programs, they ceased their funding efforts based on the percentage of youth that earn a HS diploma or GED. Due to the nature and duration of the Scouting program, this is not a measured statistic. However, Scouting’s long history and proven program instills lifetime values, ethical character, and leadership skills.
Over 500 inner city and underprivileged boys who otherwise might not be able to participate in Scouting were the primary beneficiaries of this funding. During such tough economic times, Scouting needs your help more than ever.
We ask for your support directly to the Coastal Carolina Council BSA or to designate a portion of your United Way donation to the Coastal Carolina Council BSA. In a time when civic pride, duty to God & Country, and cheerful service to others is needed more than ever, please help support your local Scouting programs.

Parking on DI - Common Sense...Not So Common
I was absolutely appalled to read the letter to the editor titled "Allow Parking on Both Sides of the Street" in the June 17th issue. The article starts off with "if it’s not broke, don’t fix it." This totally misses the point of the parking restriction. Not only is it "broken," but parking on the street is dangerous and against the law. And while the letter writer may have rarely experienced problems navigating between parked cars or unruly yielders, let me assure you that they are out there in droves. There isn’t a trip I make where someone doesn’t try to play roadside chicken! Moreover, it’s crazy to think that parking on the street is ok and that discouraging it will actually make this worse. Maybe in bizzaro land! And I’m not even going to get into the stupid golf carts that are the biggest traffic hazard and accident just waiting to happen of all on the Island. Ug!
You see, the reason you people think it is illogical to prevent street parking is simply because you view it as an inconvenience. Why don’t you want to park on your driveway? It’s pretty bad when people are seemingly so self centered that they feel ‘forced’ into complying with basic safety rules and regulations. What if we all just ignored the rules and did whatever we wanted all the time regardless of the consequences. Seriously...?!
Yes...homeowners and guests you will at some point have to walk and actually cross the street. Oh my goodness, how horrible to be briefly inconvenienced.
But I am still un-clear as to why on earth anyone has to cross the street when they/you should be parking in your triple/double wide garage, or drive way that is large enough to house numerous small boats, suvs, golf carts, mobile homes, and more. Maybe you just have too much stuff and should consider getting rid of some of it so you don’t spill out onto the streets.
Same thing for contractors - they should be parking on - you guessed it - your property. Quite simply, if they are working on your house then they should park in your driveway. Bottom line - if you people would simply just park in your garages and/or driveways as opposed to wherever the heck "you want to" DI would be a safer place!
And on a final note...please let’s consider our civil servants that are seemingly taken for granted. Remember the people that deliver your mail and pickup your garbage. Their jobs are hard enough. They deserve to be able to operate their vehicles without having to weave in and out, up and down and all around your, yours, his, hers, the landscapers, the contractors, the golf carts, or any other type of vehicles you own....for crying out loud...give them a break. And while you’re at it, get your dang garbage carts OFF the street. They too belong in your driveway and should be placed the right way round for pickup.
