Keep your Town Alive to Thrive
I am saddened to see Island Overstocks close their doors. Here we had a mini-Costco right in our own backyard and yet there was not enough support from island residents to keep it open. If just 500 of the thousands of residents on the island had shopped there regularly, he could have kept the doors open.  What a loss, they had great merchandise at reduced prices - and how sad that our community has seen businesses close due to lack of support.
We have Island Expressions with framing, gifts, home goods, jewelry, etc., the Dollar Store with many items we use every day, bridal and dress shops, jeweler, pet store, flower shop, many wonderful restaurants, pharmacy, banks, liquor store, UPS store, Qwik Pak, Closet Case, doctors, dentists, vet, hair salons, spa, lawyers, fitness, computer repair, insurance agencies, storage, real estate and leasing agencies, Publix, farmer’s market (just to name a few) and a host of other businesses that all need our  patronage in order to remain here.  So many residents do not realize, visit, or take advantage of what we have here on the island. Check them out and let’s rally behind them so that we can develop our town and keep their doors open.

Team in Training for cancer research
I have quite an adventurous spirit and enjoy challenging opportunities. Recently, one of my good friends asked me if I was interested in participating in a marathon with her. Thinking the question over for a few seconds, I thought, “Why not? You only live once!” And this once in a lifetime opportunity has led me to sign-up for the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco, CA, on October 14, 2012! I will be running/walking 26.2 miles as part of the Team in Training program. This program helps raise money for cancer research. The funds raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program uses the funds raised at such events to help find the cures, research, education and better treatment for those impacted by leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma.
This is where my story really unfolds. You’re probably asking yourself, “Why Team in Training?” It’s simple. I’m here to help fight cancer! With your support, I will complete this marathon in honor of one of my amazing friends, Jessica, who lost her sister, Sarah, to melanoma is April. Even though Sarah did not have leukemia, I believe that cancer is cancer. Whether it’s research, treatment, or education, the support from all benefits all. I have started my training for the marathon and already know it will be the strength and support that Jessica gave Sarah while battling cancer brings me to the finish line. I never fully understood what it meant to be a sister until I saw the bond between Jessica and Sarah. Jessica was at Sarah’s side until the day she passed away. I don’t think Jessica knows or will ever know how inspirational she is, and how grateful I am to call her my friend! Through the strength of their relationship, I will be able to complete this marathon. I will cross the finish line in honor of all sisters and the importance behind being there for each other every step of the way!
By joining Team in Training, I will be receiving their support through a guided program fully preparing participants physically for such an endeavor. There are several options on how you can help me during this exciting, possibly exhausting, and moving challenge:
1. Make a donation to support my participation in Team in Training and help advance kicking cancers butt. You may make your donation on my web page or mail a check to me made out to LLS. Every donation is 100% tax deductible. My fundraising goal is $4,000.
2. Encourage me and pray for me over the next few months. I will be keeping my web page updated as I continue training and fundraising!
Thank you for all of your support!
