Quarterback Kevin Herbst, playing in place of the injured Nick Theos, has led to the team to two victories.

No. 35 Richard Mahon and No. 22 Marvin Weston are in on the tackle. The BE defense held Academic Magnet scoreless.

The Battling Bishops follow up on last week’s win against Porter-Gaud with another victory, this time with a shutout against the Academic Magnet Raptors, scoring a 0-42 win at home last Friday.
Now with only one loss to a non-conference team, the Bishops look like they have regained the momentum they displayed last year by demonstrating tough defensive play and an effective offense.
In the first possession of the game, Griffey Loy set the pace as he ran in a short 6-yd touchdown with less than three minutes into the first quarter, followed by another scoring carry just before the quarter ended.  D’Angelo Stephenson followed Loy’s lead, putting six more on the board, only one minute into the second quarter. Nick Shiver followed with a 47-yard touchdown run.
The only thing that could slow the Bishops scoring drives were several penalties.
In the second half, the Bishops didn’t lose a step as the squad basically replayed the first half with quick scoring with only penalties slowing their momentum.
In the third quarter, Griffey Loy ran one in for the score, only to be called back for a holding penalty.  They answered quickly as D’Angelo Stephenson took one into the end zone on a 42-yard run. Weston Marvin sealed the deal on a 22-yard run and gave the Bishops the final scoring play of the game.
The Raptors of Academic Magnet could not get a drive effective enough to score against the Bishops’ defense, and could not defend against their running attack. The game ended with the Bishops disallowing the Raptors any chance to score and a 42-point deficit.
The big lead allowed Coach Cantey to get a look at some reserve players who he felt deserved some playing time and an early look at some future starters.
With Herbst still playing QB for the injured Nick Theos, it seems that there is some depth in this position with no new injuries in this game; Coach Cantey was also impressed with the way his team has improved in conditioning.
“We have had to sub in a lot [in the last couple of games] but we should be in condition to have starters playing the whole game,” he said following the game.
Next week the Bishops will play away at 7:30 at North Charleston against the 1-2 Cougars.
