The Bishop England football team had a lot to be thankful for after Friday‘s solid victory over Silver Bluff. In addition to winning the Lower State Championship title, they avoided key injuries. In front of about 3500 fans, the Bishops reloaded with the return of DeAngelo Stephenson, and turned up the heat by putting 42 points on the board and by allowing only one touchdown from the Bulldogs. This wrapped up the last hurdle before returning to the Class AA Division II State championship this Friday.
“We ran the ball very well, DeAngelo made up for missing last week. Most of what we did offensively worked, and defensively we did really well,” Coach Cantey said following the game.
The Bishops scored in almost every quarter of the game, most in the second and third quarter. Nick Shiver put the first touchdown on the board with an 11-yard run in the first quarter. Quarterback Kevin Herbst had an outstanding game on the ground and started the second quarter with a short run in for the second touchdown. Following an exciting goal line stand, the Bishops were able to get the ball back and Deangelo Stephenson reminded everyone of his presence as he ran 92-yard for another score to put the Bishops up by 21.
Silver Bluff scored their only touchdown in the game in the second quarter when Jalen Jackson tossed a 32-yard pass to Jaylen Douse to lessen the deficit for the Bulldogs before going into the half.
It was in the third quarter that the Bishops took advantage of their effective ground game as Kevin Herbst and Griffie Loy both ran in touchdowns followed by Stephenson who ran 57 yards to put the final score on the board for the quarter and in the game.
Coach Cantey thought his team performed very well considering the distractions of having to play right after a holiday and make a three hour bus ride into an opposing field. Throughout the game there were standout plays on the defensive side of the ball, especially from defensive back Reed Fosberry, who had an interception, and Chandler Sambets on the defensive line with a key fumble recovery. Zach Richer and Weston Marvin showed their senior leadership on both sides of the ball throughout the game and will look forward to the opportunity to win a state championship one more time.
Additionally Coach Cantey has the utmost respect for Silver Bluff and their coach.
“Coach Lown at Silver Bluff is a really good coach; they are young and have had several injuries.”
The Bishops will travel to Benedict College this Friday at 8:30 to play the 11-2 Abbeville Panthers for the chance to repeat a follow up victory in the Division II AA State championship game. Abbeville is the returning state champion from last year when they were in Class A Division 1.
