The Bishops began their run for a repeat state championship in strong fashion as they easily defeated Mullins at home Friday in their first playoff game. It was a clear example of unequal opponents as the Bishops put up 52 points on the visiting Auctioneers and almost a complete shutout with a final score of 52-8.
“We are staying healthy. We did a really good job on offense and defense [tonight],” Coach Cantey said following the win.
The game started with a bang as DeAngelo Stephenson ran in a 75-yard kickoff return for the first score of the game. On the Bishop’s next possession quarterback Kevin Herbst ran in one on the keeper. Drew Costa followed this with a 45- yard field goal to expand their lead, 17-0.
The Bishops scored one more in the first quarter and added to their lead in the second with two back-to-back touchdown passes to Jaime Lopez-White, one on a long 50-yd pass and the next on a 30-yarder. Before the end of the half, Nick Shiver grabbed an interception and ran it back for a touchdown that covered 46 yards.  Prior to this, Coach Cantey had already made a few substitutions, but his team continued their momentum, as they would throughout the rest of this game.
Mullins scored in the last two minutes of the game, recovering a fumble in the end zone for their only touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion. That ended the game with the final score 52-8.
This week the Bishops will face the Lee Central Stallions who defeated Aynor 40-6 in their first playoff match. The Stallions will travel to play BE and with only two losses this season may give the Bishops more of a challenge. The Bishops now have only two more opponents to get past to make it back to the state championship.
The second round of these playoffs vs. Lee Central will be played at Jack Cantey Stadium this Friday at 7:30.
