The most anticipated game of the year for Coach John Cantey and his Bishops was  played last Friday and the big question of whether they would repeat as State Champions again was answered; yes, and with another shutout much like they did in 2011. With the 21-0 victory over the Abbeville Panthers, the Bishops enjoy the title of Division II-2A State Champions for the second straight time.
The Bishops knew they would be in for a battle against the 11-2 Abbeville team which claimed two state championships in Class A prior to being moved into the Class AA Division II.
The Bishop scored first in the opening quarter when Jamie Garrett caught a 62-yd touchdown pass from Nick Theos off a lateral from quarterback Kevin Herbst. Abbeville attempted a 39-yd FG, but failed when the ball fell wide right. From here the game evolved into a defensive battle where it seemed as though neither side would see the end zone.
“The first score was huge, we felt like that may be the only scoring. They started strong in the second half and ran the ball up the field, but we finally got the stop, then fumbled it back, then stopped them again, that was a big momentum swing,” Coach Cantey stated following the victory.
The Bishops were not able to get into scoring position until the fourth quarter when  a big 3rd down conversion to Griffie Loy on a screen play put the Bishops within a couple of yards of their next scoring opportunity. Kevin Herbst capitalized on a short run to make it 14-0. He followed up with a 29-yard run later in the quarter which would also be the final scoring play in the game for either side.
Herbst, who had a great game and season this year, stepped into his position after an injury to Nick Theos and proved he was up to the challenge of being the starting quarterback. In this game he gained 132 rushing yards on 20 carries and threw for 55 yards.
“Offensively Herbst did a great job running the option. We wanted to run the ball straight at them,” Coach Cantey said. “They swarmed the ball well, so we didn’t give DeAngelo [Stephenson] the ball much on the edge.”
Coach Cantey will enjoy this win until it’s time to begin looking towards next year. He had 20 seniors leading this team who will be greatly missed when practices begin for next season.
