The Daniel Island Defenders is an independent basketball team composed of 7th and 8th grade players from Daniel Island and the surrounding area. The team was formed in February 2013 by Daniel Island resident Gary Allen to provide the opportunity for these athletes to play against the highest possible level of competition in over 20 games of tournament play throughout the state of South Carolina.
From late March through mid June, the Defenders played in 6 tournaments organized by American Youth Basketball Association (AYBA), Youth Basketball of America (YBOA), or National Tournament Basketball Association (NTBA).
The Defenders finished 3rd in the Basketball of the Carolina's Lower State Qualifier Tournament, Runner Up in the Low Country Elite Ball or Fall Tournament, 3rd in Basketball of the Carolina's State Championship (Silver Bracket), and Runner Up in the Champions of Charleston NTBA Pre Nationals Kickoff Tournament to end the season.
The Defenders were coached by Gary Allen, Richard Poole, and Robert Hamlin, and the players worked countless hours to improve their conditioning and basketball skills. The team thanks the Daniel Island School for use of its gym for practices and game preparation, resulting in an exciting and successful season.
