The USTA today recently announced that Diane Barker from Daniel Island will represent the United States at the 33rd ITF Seniors World Team Championships.  The nation’s top women and men tennis players in five age groups from thirty-five to fifty-five will compete against teams from over 30 countries March 18-23 2013. The event will be held in Antalya, Turkey. Over 1,000 athletes are expected to participate.
Joining Barker, representing the United States at the 2013 ITF Seniors World Team Championships in the Maureen Connolly Cup for women 55 and over, will be teammates Susan Wright, from Grand Junction, CO., Tina Karwasky, from Glendale, CA and Patricia Purcell, from St. Louis, MO.
Barker has represented the US on many USTA national cup teams, most recently on the winning 2012 Maureen Connolly Cup. She is winner of many national singles championships and in 2012 she won the 55 Women's Clay Court Championship and the 55 ITF World Championship, a repeat of her 2011 success. Barker also holds 8 Mother/Son national titles with son Matthew. Barker is a long time resident of the Charleston area and graduated from the College of Charleston in 1980. She is teaching pro at the I'on Club and is active in her community as a volunteer for the Special Olympics along with her husband Jack. She also serves on the Adaptive Tennis Committee for USTA S.C. and the 10 and under Committee for the USTA Southern Section,
The United States medaled in 8 of the 10 Cups held last year in San Diego, CA.
Following the ITF Seniors World Team Championships, the ITF Senior World Individual Championships will take place March 24-31 at some of the same sites in Turkey.
The ITF Seniors/Super-Seniors World Team Championships is the most coveted team event on the ITF Seniors circuit.  Since its inception, the number of competitors attracted to this event has increased year by year. In 1993, the ITF took the decision to divide the Seniors World Championships into two groups, Seniors for the younger veterans and Super-Seniors for the older players.
