Local gymnasts win medals at area meets

Daniel Island resident, Dawson Wells, 9, recently met Morgan Hamm who was a silver medalist in the 2008 Summer Olympics. Welss has competed in several local meets and has won medals in Vault, Rings, and Floor.

This winter has not only brought many gold, silver, and bronze medals to Olympians in Sochi, it has also brought those medals to local gymnasts who have participated in two recent regional competitions. East Cooper Gymnastics and Gymnastics Academy of Charleston, which are both off Clemenats Ferry Road, shared their results from the 2014 Simpsonville Meet, and the 2014 Charleston Challenge which took place in Ladson.

There were several winners in the Level 6 division. Lindsay Ross, 12, won 1st in Vault and Bars, 2nd in Floor, 3rd in Beam for her age group. She also won gold All-Around.  Gray Hutchins, 11, placed 1st in Floor, 2nd in Bars and Beam, and 3rd in Vault in her age group.  She won silver All-Around. Mina Schaafsma, 11, won 1st on Beam, 3rd on Bars and Floor in her age group. She won a bronze medal All-Around. Meghan Cradock, 13, won 2nd on Vault, and 4th for Bars, Beam and Floor in her age group. She won 4th All- Around.
There were several winners in the Level 2 division. Haven Foster, 9, won 2nd for Vault, 1st for Bars and Beam, and 3rd for Floor in her age group. She won a gold medal All-Around. Marli Dingle, 8, won 2nd in Vault in her age group, and 5th All-Around. Payton Hemmingway, 10, won 5th on Beam and Floor in her age group. She won 6th All-Around.
There were several winners in the Level 3 division. Mia Rogers, 10, won 1st in Bars, 2nd in Beam, and 5th in Vault and Floor for her age group. She won silver All-Around.  Lauren Rosier, 11, won 3rd in Beam, 2nd in Vault, 4th in Bars, and 6th in Floor for her age group.  She won a bronze medal All- Around. Brooke Millet, 10, won 1st in Bars, 2nd in Floor, and 3rd in Vault for her age group. She won 4th All-Around. Miley Phillips won 1st in Vault for her age group. Morgan Rosier won 3rd in Vault for her age group.

In the Level 2 division, Julianna Schimpf, 7, won 1st in Vault, Beam and Floor, and 2nd in Bars in her age group. She also won gold in the All-Around division. In the Level 3 division, Meghan George, 9, won 1st in Vault, Beam and Floor, and won 6th in Bars in her age division. She won a gold medal in the All-Around division.
In the XS Level, Grace Hotchkiss, 11, won 1st in Vault, Bars and Beam, and tied for 4th in Floor in her age group. She also won gold in the All-Around division.

East Cooper Gymnastics Boys (coached by Billy Jenkins)
In the Level 6 division, several boys won medals. Logan Frailey, 11, won 1st in Rings, Vault, and High Bar. He won 2nd in Floor for his age group. He also won a gold medal All-Around.  Alex Katzburg, 12, won 1st in Floor, 2nd in Pommel Horse and High Bar, and 3rd in Vault for his age group.  He won a silver medal All-Around. In the Level 5 division, Dawson Wells, 9, won 3rd in Vault, 4th in Rings, and 5th in Pommel Horse in his age group. He won 5th All-Around.
