Less than a fortnight until Christmas, we asked our readers to tell us about favorite gifts they’ve received. The answers were wide ranging, and far reaching – from a first bicycle some 65 years ago to an angel necklace fashioned from a paperclip. Following are answers to the question: "What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?"
·
"A rare copy of a book I had loved as a child – The Little Mailman of Bayberry Lane! My husband tracked it down and it meant the world to me."
·
"The gift of life and health."
·
"Books."
·
"My Son. He was born in time to snuggle him in a huge stocking and place him under the Christmas tree."
·
"A completely paid 4 week trip to Europe from my mom and the offer to watch my two young children while I was gone."
·
"Two Golden Retrievers: Emma and Annie."
·
"Personal Buddha for my dash board from my daughter."
·
"A puppy we got for the kids."
·
"A new camera."
·
"My first bicycle, when I was about 6-7 in the 1930s and it was used and somewhat abused, but I loved it. How far have we come?"
·
"As a child: an oak desk for my room. As an adult: my oak roll top desk. Now if I could just have a mountain top or ocean view from the window next to it... :) Sounds like a theme, doesn’t it?"
·
"A sapphire ring. One sapphire for each of my three boys. My husband can be so thoughtful."
·
"A spectacular angel necklace from my son made from a butterfly shape paperclip, pretty gold bead for the halo all hung [with] a delicate piece of string...priceless!" – Colleen Adams
·
"Boxer puppy."
·
"The best gift I ever got as a child was a pool stick from my dad. I was fortunate to grow up in a restaurant where my dad and I could always play pool. As an adult the best gift was a really cool HP printer from my mom. I really like to scrap book and take pictures. The printer can do everything! I also have an awesome husband who gets me the best bra’s for Christmas!!" – Allison Barnette
·
"Along with the special handmade gifts from my children and the love they represent, I’d have to say the best gift is one my husband has given me more than once, a week at my favorite spa, the Golden Door."
·
"A trip to Alaska!"
·
"Three years ago we had just moved here and I was very homesick for my friends in NC. My three children went together and bought me a puppy for Christmas. Taking her to the beach each day throughout the winter helped me cope."
·
"I asked my Dad for a boat one year. I really meant something to float in the bath, but my dad built me a wooden boat that I loved. He kept telling me he would paint it, but I was impatient and decided to finish it myself - with crayons! Thirty-odd years later, I display it with pride because to this day it represents something my dad did just for me, the youngest of six girls. "
·
"Playmobil sets - one was a hospital set and the other was a cowboys and Indians set. My sister and I would take them to the creek behind our house and build islands for them to live on, make pretend that a tree stump in the woods was a castle that they had to fight for, and (the very best) was playing with them in the tub for hours on end."
