Dear Daniel Island
Community,
We are ready to swing our doors open and welcome you to another school year! Bring your vitality, your energy and your smiles and fill our building with the hum of learning and friendship. Along with familiar faces, you’ll see many new ones. 
Mrs. Kori Brown is our new Assistant Principal for grades K-2. She comes to us with 19 years of experience in education and administration. She has already been an asset to our planning and we welcome her expertise. Dr. Howder will continue to lead our middle school and Mrs. Wimmer will lead our intermediate grades 3-5. We’ve added new teachers, rearranged teachers, and shuffled classrooms to be prepared for 60 homeroom classes. There will be 44 homerooms in the elementary grades and 16 in the middle grades. Our school academic and support staff is sitting at 132 positions and enrollment is currently 1,375 students. 
We’ll be a busy community of learning and we want you to continue to team with us to be a part of the progress.  Whether you’re a parent or community member, we welcome your involvement. We have a very committed group of volunteers who refer to themselves as the “Retired Golfers” who listen to our first graders read; they are always looking to add to their group, golfer or not! We also have volunteers who routinely help shelf books in the media center, duplicate papers, coach volleyball and basketball or mentor students. Our PTA plans and organizes two amazing Daniel Island events, The Pumpkin Walk and 2nd Annual DI Luminary Event. If you’re interested in volunteering at DIS in any capacity this year, please register at www.bcsdvolunteers.com. We’d love to have you as part of our team!
One of our goals this year is to fully implement the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which are for English language arts and math. These standards will also be integrated with our existing South Carolina State Standards for Social Studies and Science. The purpose of the CCSS is to increase the rigor of instruction so that our students are prepared for the expectations of college and career. Our professional development will focus on effective resources and lessons (upgraded curriculum) along with impactful instructional strategies. The purpose is to improve education so that we engage students in higher levels of thinking, writing and speaking. Along with the ability to work and solve problems in the future, our students will need to know how to share assumptions and ideas so that learning can be clarified and ideas can be developed. 
Above all we want your child to be safe and feel safe at school. In order to insure a secure building we ask that you bring photo identification to the main office to sign in to the building. 
Please mark your calendars for the Parent Information Sessions: K-2, Sept. 12 at 6 pm; Grades 3-5, Sept. 5 at 6; pm; Grades 6-8, Sept. 10 at 6 pm.

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year! 
Daniel Island will soon be filled with the excitement of a new school year. Bishop England will welcome the freshmen and sophomores to campus on Wednesday, August 14, and the juniors and seniors will be welcomed on Friday, August 16 for student orientation. Over 680 students will fill the halls on the first day of school, Monday, August 19.
This fall, Bishop England High School will welcome 186 freshmen to campus, and international students from China, France, Brazil and South Korea. The school is also excited to welcome several new students into our Options Program; an inclusive educational experience for students with special needs.  Bishop England continues to live out its mission to “promote the spiritual, intellectual, and physical growth of the individual through the combined efforts of parents/guardians and faculty by establishing the best possible environment for learning: a climate of safety, trust, and respect for the individual and an appreciation for the acquisition of learning.”
Since September 22, 1915, Bishop England High School has provided Catholic secondary education to the Charleston community, and it our responsibility as a faculty and staff to continue the tradition of academic excellence, athletic success and spiritual formation. I am honored to join the exceptional faculty and staff of Bishop England, and I look forward to working with them for many years.

Dear Hanahan High School families,
School will open in just a few days, and as principal of Hanahan High School, I wanted to welcome you and your student to our school. The Berkeley County School District strives to ignite, in every student, a passion for life-long learning. At Hanahan High School, we share that commitment and we will work very hard to help all of our students achieve high levels of success academically and personally.
Educating a child is one of the most worthwhile efforts we undertake in this nation. It is also one of the most challenging, and we need your help to do it well. Please know you are welcome in our school and your involvement in the lives of your children is critical to their success. Help them to understand that school is important and success in school is something that your family values. Research clearly indicates that students whose parents are involved in their education do better in school than children whose parents are not involved.
I am aware that communication is critical. We will provide updates by way of the Alert Now “robo call” system, through our web page, and in periodic newsletters. We encourage you to be an active partner with us, whether you choose to join our school’s PTSA, volunteer at the school or take part in special events. We welcome your involvement in our school.
Please join us for Open House on Monday, August 26 at 6 pm in our auditorium. Following a brief presentation, you will have the opportunity to visit your students’ classes and meet the teachers.
I also encourage you to stay in touch with your child’s teacher or teachers and with me if you have any questions during the school year. Working together, I know we can make this a great year at Hanahan High School and I look forward to partnering with you this year to help your child learn!
