Community meeting for new Cainhoy area master-planned community set for October 15

   A master planned community similar to Daniel Island may be in the works for a large parcel of land off Clements Ferry Road. Neighborhoods in the area received notice this week from the City of Charleston that a community meeting will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 pm on October 15 at the Gildan Office, 1980 Clements Ferry Road, to gather input on the proposed project from those living in the area. The meeting will be hosted by City of Charleston Planning Staff.
   The “PUD” or planned unit development would be a master planned, mixed use community that would incorporate residences, businesses, schools, parks and potentially some employment centers and light industrial sites, according to a notice sent by the city to neighborhood representatives. City of Charleston Planning Commission Director Christopher Morgan said that the development would be bigger than Daniel Island.
   The new community would be located within the 5,000 plus acres known as the “Cainhoy Plantation Properties” owned by Cainhoy Land & Timber, LLC, the same entity that also owns the site that is currently under contract for a planned new high school to serve students in the Daniel Island and Cainhoy area, as well as an adjacent parcel that has been identified as a potential location for a new middle school.
   Daniel Island Company President Matt Sloan said his company is in discussions with the landowner concerning management services for the new development. The October 15 meeting represents the very early stages of the planning process. Morgan added that plans have not yet been submitted to the city for the project, but that talks are underway. The City Planning Commission is expected to take up the matter at a November 20 meeting.
