Daniel Island Academy was awarded the Spare The Air - Outstanding School at a ceremony held last week at the school. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control recognized Daniel Island Academy as an environmental leader that has made a voluntary commitment to promote and practice air quality improvement in South Carolina.
The Spare The Air is awarded to those environmental leaders that demonstrate continuous environmental improvement through such practices as energy conservation, behavioral modifications, and other strategies to improve air quality.
Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., accepting the award on behalf of the school noted, “This wonderful school had the great idea to help make our air cleaner. Daniel island Academy should be proud of their accomplishment.”
Daniel Island Academy was recognized for its efforts in implementing an anti-idling campaign and for bringing awareness to its community. The school implemented the Breathe Better (B2) project by educating staff, students and parents on the negative health and environmental impact of vehicle idling. The school takes pride in encouraging their teachers to attend training and educational workshops, and bring back innovative ideas that engage and educate their children in the classroom.
Speaking to the children attending the ceremony, Catherine Templeton, Director, SC DHEC, stated, “Take a deep breath. You are smarter and have more energy because you just took a breath of clean air due to this wonderful initiative to improve the air at your school.”
Previously, Daniel Island Academy was awarded Sustainability in School Spirit by the City of Charleston’s Green Business Challenge (GBC), a voluntary Charleston metro area program aimed at a broad range of local businesses and institutions to promote environmental sustainability while enhancing profitability.
Daniel Island Academy (DIA) is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and offers full time, part time and mother’s morning out programs for children ages 12 months through 5 years of age.
