The Rotary Club of Daniel Island will be hosting its fourth annual charity duck race on Saturday, June 12, 2010 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thirty thousand rubber ducks will be dropped from high the I-526 Wando Bridge into the Wando River and then float, with the tide, to the finish. The Daniel Island Waterfront Park and Community Pier will again serve as the finish line and duck race central. The duck drop is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. The race should take about half an hour. There will be entertainment and activities for children such as jump castles, face painting and more along with food available for purchase from local restaurants. Prizewinners will be announced around 1p.m.
The first 30 ducks to cross the finish line will have a chance for prizes totaling $30,000. First prize is $15,000. Two prizes are cruise packages donated by Carnival Cruise Lines. The first 10 ducks to cross the finish line have a chance to win a million dollar prize sponsored by Student Transportation of America.
Ducks can be adopted online for a suggested donation of $10 each (credit cards are accepted) at www.CharlestonDuckRace.com, at any of the "duck adoption" boxes located throughout the area or by contacting a Rotary member. The net profits are used for (1) Rotary projects focused on our area such as children’s literacy at the Daniel Island and Cainhoy schools, college scholarships for high school students, and food drives in the Cainhoy community, (2) Rotary International clean water missions, and (3) cash donations to selected local charities. The charities selected to benefit from the 2010 Duck Race are: Tri-county Family Ministries, East Cooper Community Outreach, Carolina Youth Development Center, Cainhoy Athletic Soccer Club, Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center, American Red Cross, Lowcountry Food Bank, My Sister’s House, East Cooper Meals-on-wheels, Windwood Farms, Summerville Miracle League and Gift of Life.
This event is presented by The Rotary Club of Daniel Island and other local Rotary Clubs including Charleston, East Cooper Breakfast (Mt. Pleasant) Club, North Charleston Breakfast Club and Summerville. The Rotary Charity Duck Race is made possible with the help of its Million Dollar sponsor Student Transportation of America, its Platinum sponsors Daniel Island Real Estate and Carnival Cruise Lines and its many Gold and Silver sponsors.
