Got Football Fever?
Here's a dose of BE Bishops and Hanahan Hawks!

You can feel it in the air, yes. But you can also smell the freshly cut stadium grass, hear the bands warming up in the stands, see the fans dressed conspicuously in orange or green, and taste the concession popcorn. It's high school football season, baby! And between Bishop England's quest for a three-peat State title and Hanahan's 24-0 win over Wando at last Thursday's Sertoma Classic, it's clear our hometown schools are ready to bring it!

Q & A with Hanahan Hawk coach Charlie Patterson:

Daniel Island News: Can you tell us a bit about your summer training schedule and regimen?
Charles Patterson: Over the summer we do weight training and conditioning four days a week. We also have ten 7-on-7 competitions against other schools. The players that make their required number of days will get their name on the back of the home jersey and a pair of Nike football gloves.
DIN: Have you had any changes to coaching staff?
CP: We have a new defensive coordinator, Steve Blanchard, who was most recently the head coach at Andrews High, and has coached at Berkeley and Timberland High Schools as well.
DIN: Are you making any modifications to your offensive and/or defensive strategy?
CP: We always make slight changes in our offense to fit our present players, so we can best utilize their talents. Our defense has changed some because we have a new coordinator.
DIN: Who do you anticipate will be your toughest opponent this year?
CP: We respect all of our opponents and do not take anyone for granted.
DIN: Where would you place the odds of having a season as stellar as last year's? (In 2012, HHS took the Region 8-AAA championship.)
CP: I am not an odds maker, but if we stay healthy and play to our abilities, I think we have a great chance to be as good as or better than we were last year.
DIN: How many seniors are returning this year?
CP: We have 18 seniors.
DIN: What is the focus in developing talent in your JV team?
CP: Our main objective in our JV and B-team is to have the kids learn our system and make sure that they want to come back next year and remain in the program.
DIN: What do the Hawks most need from their fans in the stands?
CP: What we need most from our fans is to show up at the games and cheer loudly when the young men give great effort!

Q & A with Bishop England coach John Cantey:

Daniel Island News: Can you tell us a bit about your summer training schedule and regimen?
John Cantey: During the summer, we worked out four days a week from 7:00 to 9:00 am. We went to Ft. Dorchester for four days of 7-on-7, and we went to Stratford for three days of 7-on-7.
DIN: Have you had any changes to coaching staff?
JC: We have no coaching changes. Jason McDermott is the defensive coach and coaches DBs and WRs. Mike Darnell coaches the LBs and QBs, Steve Meyer coaches OL and DL, Danny Bushong coaches the kicker.
DIN: Are you making any modifications to your offensive and/or defensive strategy?
JC: We are running the same O and D as last year.
DIN: Who do you anticipate will be your toughest opponent this year?
JC: Our toughest opponents will be Hanahan, Woodland, and West Ashley. Last year, Hanahan was our only loss; the game was tied going into the fourth.
DIN: Where would you place the odds of having a season as stellar as last year's? (In 2012, BEHS snagged its second consecutive State title.)
JC: We have to see how we progress through the year to see if we can win a State title. We are a work in progress every year, since we always have so much turnover.
DIN: How many seniors are returning this year?
JC: We have 15 seniors, three of them are in their first year playing.
DIN: What is the focus in developing talent in your JV team?
JC: We need to have our JV team learn fundamentals and have fun.
DIN: What do the Bishops most need from their fans in the stands?
JC: We have had great fan support in the last couple of years. We need them to have a lot of enthusiasm in the stands.
