The Daniel Island News today debuts a new section titled "Neighbors in the News," and we begin by profiling Cindy Holmes, who both lives and works on the island (at the Daniel Island School). The area resident who nominated her had this to say: "Cindy is a wonderful, upbeat, can-do person - making things happen for parents, teachers, and administrators at the school with such a positive attitude. (Her story of being widowed and remarried is also motivational). She is the kind of neighbor we all enjoy!"
If there’s a neighbor that we should know more about, please feel free to nominate them by sending an email to survey@thedanielislandnews.com. We’ll take it from there – asking them to complete an online survey so that we can learn more about who they are, and where they’ve been.
Cindy’s story, in her own words
"I am a survivor! I have fought the battle against cancer and won. I have lost my first husband in 2000 and somehow was fortunate enough to find love again. I have been happily married to George Holmes for over 5 years now. I have been blessed with two beautiful and talented children. My sister and her family live in Mt. Pleasant and my parents live just around the corner here on Daniel Island. I am surrounded with friends-like-family. I work the front desk at Daniel Island School. I love my community! I grew up all over the world and couldn’t have picked a better place to plant my roots. I stay busy trying to keep up with my kids. Julie is a sophomore at Hanahan HS and Justin is a 7th grader at Daniel Island School. Activities such as swim team, basketball, and football keep us busy most days! Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the chaos of life...I try to remember to count my many blessings every day. Each day is a gift and we should all try to remember to make each day count like it is our last."

A recent Memorable Moment
"My daughter made a power point of our beloved Golden Retriever, Cooper, for my husband at Christmas. She found pictures from when Copper was young until the present and set it to music. We lost Cooper to cancer in November 2009. It was a great gift and will keep Cooper alive in our memory forever!"
Final word – What else should we know?
"I love life. I love people. I feel blessed each and every day. I try to see each day as a gift. Life isn’t always easy...but if we hang in there long enough, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel! When one door closes, another opens . . . ."
