Local dentist helps
parents banish excess candy

One area dentist is redefining the phrase, “Put your money where your mouth is”! This Halloween, trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to Dr. Randy's office in Mt. Pleasant and receive $1 a pound (up to five pounds). The candy is shipped to Operation Gratitude, a national charity that uses the candy as packing material in care packages for troops in combat zones around the world.
“Enjoy some candy, but no one needs several pounds of it lying around,” says Dr. Randy Pagenkopf, who practices on Long Point Road in Mt. Pleasant. “This is a great way to teach kids about taking charge of their health as well as helping others. Everyone wins!”
Here are some startling facts from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry: Decay is the most common childhood illness, it is five times more common than asthma! 28%of all children between the ages of 2 and 5 already have a cavity and six million school hours are lost each year to teeth-related issues.
There are two opportunities to donate: Candy will be collected on Saturday, November 2nd, at Dr. Randy's office at 757 Long Point Road in Mt. Pleasant from 10am to 12pm. Several businesses, such as Princess of Tides, Wonder Works, and Creative Spark will be on hand with activities.  You can also bring your candy to Dr. Randy's booth at Daniel Island Park Day on Saturday, November 9th from 11am to 5pm. All candy must be unopened. There is a five pound maximum per child.
Last year, Dr. Randy and his staff collected and shipped 524 pounds of candy to Operation Gratitude! Dr. Randy Pagenkopf is a board certified pediatric dentist in Mt. Pleasant. Please call our office at 843-971-6221 for more information or email Cullan Pagenkopf at cullanq@yahoo.com.
