Blessed to be a blessing

Daniel Island resident Bridget Downing’s life story, featured on pages 12-13 in this week’s paper, may give you some inspiration. Her acknowledgement of her blessings, and the way she lives her life, reminded me that while counting our blessings is a worthwhile endeavor, sharing our blessings with others is really living. While indeed Bridget does count her blessings, read the story to find out how she shares her blessing with others by living a meaningful life.
At the start of a new year, many of us begin to organize, to purge, and to make resolutions. Over the weekend I was organizing my home office and came across a journal from 2009 wherein each day I wrote a long list of blessings. Many self-help gurus encourage us to keep “gratitude journals” or to take a moment each day to “count our blessings.” Taking more than just a moment to review it, I was amazed how often I wrote that I was so thankful for some of the amazing friends and co-workers who blessed me with their support and encouragement through one of the more difficult years in my own life.
Remembering our blessings is important. But let’s not stop with counting our blessings. Let’s make 2013 a year we remember that our blessings are not meant to be hoarded and guarded but that we are blessed to be a blessing to others. Hopefully you can take inspiration from Bridget’s story and find the motivation to not only count your blessings, but also to be a blessing!
