Five Years Ago
In the June 11, 2009 edition of the paper, we featured a story about severe weather and whether purchasing excess flood insurance above the $250,000 FEMA coverage limit was a good option for some homeowners.
In top news Governor Sanford vetoed a state port authority restructuring bill and, of the veto, Jim Merrill called it “nonsensical.”
Our centerfold feature was reader written book reviews. Books reviewed included “A Long Way Gone (Memoirs of a Boy Soldier)” by Ishmael Beah (reviewed by Pam Theising) and “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows (reviewed by Pat Richards).
In other news, rental occupancy rates on Daniel Island were up; Karsen’s Kloset, recycled couture for girls, opened inside A Perfect Match in the Publix Shopping Center; 9 homes closed on Daniel Island in May, 2009; the featured artist of the week was Dianne Tennyson.
In sports, we featured WTA tennis professional Gail Brodsky who was training at the Family Center Tennis Center with Lenny Schloss, where she uses the HAL 3in1 system to improve her eye-hand coordination.
There was also a full page spread of photos from the Daniel Island Rotary Duck Drop.

Ten Years Ago
In the June 10, 2004 edition of the paper our cover feature, centerfold, roving reporter and kids say was about hurricane and earthquake preparedness.
In other news: Daniel Island Neighborhood Association vice-president Anne Medio spoke at a city planning meeting in opposition to a plan to cut down trees for a Charleston Battery practice field at 2000 Daniel Island Drive; Daniel Island’s new restaurant, Sienna, held its Grand Opening
celebration on Sunday, June 6; and, the Daniel Island Community Fund joined forces with Bishop England High School by awarding a four-year scholarship to Cainhoy Middle School graduate Kendra Drayton (Ms. Drayton is the first-time recipient of this highly regarded scholarship.)
In sporting news, the Daniel Island Flying Fish kicked off the first week of their inaugural season!
