Spring is here, people from around the world are visiting our island town, and the Charleston area is buzzing with activity. Whether you’re reading this as a visitor to Charleston and Daniel Island, or are a resident of our community, we’re glad you’re here.
Our island town enjoys the spotlight as the “place to be” in Charleston this week, as some of the world’s top tennis players compete in the world’s largest women’s-only tennis tournament. We’re proud to be the home of the Family Circle Cup. We’re also proud to be part of the City of Charleston, the Number One City in North America and the World’s Top Travel Destination, according to Conde Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice awards. They’re the latest in a long list of media accolades that validate our area’s reputation as a top place to visit, live and do business.
The upbeat press about Charleston over the past several years now extends to a positive portrayal of our real estate market. The continuous negative coverage of the past several years has been replaced with almost daily news about how well our market is doing. We’re a top place for real estate and we’ve recently been cited as the twelfth fastest growing metropolitan area in the country. Here on Daniel Island, we’re seeing direct proof of that.
Daniel Island Real Estate has had a strong start to the year: Sales are up significantly, the average sales price is up, inventory is down and properties are selling in less time, sometimes within just a day or two of the listing date. Despite an increase in resale listings, there is a diminishing inventory of available properties on the island. Fortunately, builders are active and looking to build once again, and for the first time in more than five years we now have multiple builders approaching our development company about constructing homes on Daniel Island.
One of the things that makes Daniel Island such a popular place to live within Charleston is its diverse offering of recreational amenities and special events. There are many exciting things happening here year-round for residents and visitors to enjoy.
Among the events that will bring visitors to Daniel Island this year is the upcoming South Carolina In-Water Boat Show. Taking place April 12-14 on the Wando River in front of the Daniel Island RealEstate Sales & Information Center, this event will showcase a full array of motor and sailing watercraft and offer landside attractions and activities for all ages, including boating and fishing demonstrations, live music and local food.
Other upcoming island events include the summer-long Daniel Island Farmers Market, which will take place on Thursday afternoons starting this month at a new location on Seven Farms Drive directly in front of the businesses located in the center of our downtown. We hope this new location will help attract visitors to the island not only for fresh produce and more at this open-air market, but also to support the many shops and restaurants that are so important to the livelihood of our community.
There are also a number of outdoor concerts on Daniel Island to look forward to this spring and summer, from the return of our community’s popular Concert in the Park in Smythe Park on May 11 and the “Sundown on the Wando” summer concert series in Children’s Park, to some big names coming to Family Circle Stadium, including Bob Dylan, O.A.R. and FUN. A complete calendar of island and area events is available at www.danielislandevents.com.
One of the events that we’re most excited about bringing to Daniel Island this year is the 2013 Coastal Living Showhouse. This spectacular waterfront home is being constructed by Max Crosby Construction in Smythe Park on a scenic homesite overlooking the Wando River. When construction of this 4,500-sq. ft. home is completed this spring, Charleston interior designer Ginger Brewton will transform it into a showcase of design and construction ideas. Coastal Living magazine will feature extensive editorial coverage of the home in the October issue, but visitors can tour it in person before that when the home opens for tours starting in late June.
Coastal Living showhomes are known for a loyal following of fans who travel around the country to visit the featured homes each year, and we’re excited for the opportunity to introduce them to our island town. A portion of proceeds from ticket sales for the tours will benefit the Greater Carolinas Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. The tours will take place on select days from late June through mid-October. This beautiful home is listed for sale by Daniel Island Real Estate.
If you’re visiting this week, I hope you enjoy your time on Daniel Island and I hope you’ll return again soon. And if you’re a resident here, I encourage you to get out and take advantage of some of the great things that are happening on Daniel Island this year.
