The Rev. Dr. Don Flowers Jr. of Charleston has been elected chairman of the board of directors for the S.C. Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. From 1994-1996 Flowers served as the first-ever board chair of the organization, which was formed in 1994 to address the issue of teen pregnancy in South Carolina through education, technical assistance, public awareness, advocacy and research.
Flowers is currently the pastor of Providence Baptist Church on Daniel Island where he has served for the past 10 years. Prior to serving at Providence Baptist, he was the minister of youth and activities at First Baptist Church in Greenville, S.C. He received his BA in Religion from Wake Forest University in 1980, a Master of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1985 and a Doctor of Ministry from Candler School of Theology, Emory University in 2000. While a student at Emory, he focused his work on sexual ethics for parents, which ultimately was the topic of his dissertation.
Since rejoining the organization’s board of directors in 2005, Flowers is passionate about the opportunities that lie ahead as chairman. "I am excited to have the opportunity to work with the S.C. Campaign again," he said. "Over the past 12 years we have made incredible progress in lowering the number of teen pregnancies in our state, but we still have a long way to go. Hopefully we can help every community—business, education, government, and religious—see that together we can improve the lives of our children and the future of our state."
Forrest Alton, executive director of the S.C. Campaign, is looking forward to the year ahead. "We are thrilled to have Reverend Flowers as our board chair and in a leadership position at the campaign. He brings our organization a deep understanding of young people and the issues they are facing. His experiences and leadership will no doubt help our organization continue to improve and increase our scope and reach."
Other members of the board of directors executive committee include: Carol Burdette of Anderson, S.C. (vice chair), Lynne B. Ford of Pawley’s Island, S.C. (secretary), and Dr. Michael Stout of Columbia, S.C. (treasurer).

The mission of the S.C. Campaign is to prevent adolescent pregnancy in South Carolina through education, technical assistance, advocacy, public awareness, and research. To achieve its mission, the S.C. Campaign works with a variety of programs – public, private, school and community based – in each of the state’s 46 counties.
