Fishing with young anglers is rewarding

Luke Bishop, an avid angler, recently caught his first Redfish.

For quite some time, Elliott (my son) and Luke Bishop (an avid 8 year old angler that lives down the street from me) have fished together in the ponds on Daniel Island.  A good bit of the time, I fish with them as well.  Luke is a very polite and well behaved young man.  He is also very good angler with a thirst for fishing knowledge.  During our last pond fishing trip, Luke asked me about catching Redfish.  I was surprised when he mentioned that he had never caught a Redfish before.  Rather than talk about Redfish, we decided to try and catch one the next afternoon.
Unfortunately, the next afternoon was extremely windy with less than optimal tides. I thought about rescheduling but did not want to disappoint Luke. So we fished despite the challenging conditions. It took a while, but eventually we found a cooperative Redfish on a submerged oyster bar in 3 to 4 feet of water. It was not a particularly large specimen, but Luke and I were all smiles. It was a very memorable fish for me. I hope it was for Luke as well.
Fishing with young anglers is a very rewarding experience. So start making plans to fish the 3rd Annual Daniel Island Kids Fishing Tournament on June 15th.  It will be a fun and memorable event for your family.
