Lane lines are attached, starting blocks are mounted, and backstroke flags are hanging in preparation for the 2009 season of the Daniel Island Swim Team. The 170 swimmers, under the leadership of Coach Rose Van Metre and assistant coaches Alex Gray, Bailey Clark and Foster Matthews, are ready to defend their 2008 fourth place position among the Coastal Carolina Aquatics Association (CCAA) swim league.
This past Thursday, the Flying Fish held its annual beginning of season inner squad meet at
Pierce Park Pool. Carrabba’s Italian Grill catered a pasta dinner for the swimmers and their families following the meet.

"I always gage the upcoming season by watching the 7-8 and 9-10 age groups swim this meet," said Coach Van Metre. "If we have at least three to four swimmers in the 7-8 age group that can swim breast and butterfly strokes legal, then I know we are in good shape for the CCAA City Meet."
Van Metre added, "I also keep my eyes on the 9-10 age group during this meet to see how their flip turns look."
The 9-10 age group is the group that makes the jump from swimming 25 meter events to swimming 50 meter events and, as a result, are required to do a flip turn at the end of the first lap.
