On my recent trip to Indiana to visit my parents I rediscovered some oldies but goodies that I had nearly forgotten even existed.

As I sat lounging on my parents couch enjoying the fact that Mimi and Papa had taken over full baby duty for me, the door bell rang. No joke, on the other side of the screen I came face to face with the Avon lady. She was dropping off my Mom’s recent order and the newest weekly Avon brochure. As I found myself with some extra time on my hands, I perused the catalog only to be completely floored by the product line. Inside I found old favorites from childhood like Dew Kiss moisturizing lip balm, still only 99 cents, and new products like Anew Clinical Advanced Wrinkle Corrector, $26.99, which earned itself a spot on Allure magazine’s Best of Beauty top 50 products listing.

Berkeley School Board hires firm to search for superintendent

The Berkeley County Board of Education unanimously agreed at its July 8 meeting to contract with BWP & Associates, a national educational leadership search firm, for assistance in finding Berkeley County School District’s next superintendent.

Chester Floyd, who has been Berkeley’s superintendent since 1997, plans to retire effective Jan. 19, 2009.

Father and son bond while fishing

I spent the past few weeks fishing in the Florida Keys. While the fishing in Florida was great, it is good to be home. After being away for a couple of weeks, I normally take a few days to re-pattern the fish before scheduling a charter. Not this time!

Prior to leaving for the Keys, I committed to fishing with Daniel Island resident Bobby Manutes and his son Paul on the day of my return (silly me). Not optimal, but the only date available on our collective calendars. No preparation, scouting or pre-fishing. We just got on the skiff and went fishing.

Golf outing raises funds for juvenile diabetes research

PHOTOS PROVIDED BY KENDELL SUTTERLIN The second annual Abby’s Friends Charity Golf Classic & Gala, held at the Daniel Island Club last month, raised over $160,000 for juvenile diabetes research.

The secondannual Abby’s Friends Charity Golf Classic and Gala was held Friday, June 27 at The Daniel Island Club. This year’s event has raised over $160,000. Plans are to donate funds to the MUSC Childrens Hospital, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and Camp Adam Fisher.

Abigail Sutterlin (Abby) is the 6-year-old daughter of John and Kendell Sutterlin, Daniel Island residents. In April of 2006 Abby was a lively 4-year-old and enjoyed life without any worries. With no family history of diabetes, the last thing Abby and her parents expected was the sudden news that Abby had Type I diabetes.

Bellinger Island focus of resident concerns

SUZANNE DETAR Last week several teenage youth enjoyed jumping off the rope and swing on Bellinger Island. Residents have raised concerns about the safety of the swing as well as about underage drinking, drug use and litter on Bellinger Island.

Bellinger Island has long been a place for Daniel Islanders and their guests to take in the Lowcountry’s beautiful natural splendor. Pristine marshlands, a winding tidal creek, a lush wooded glen of oaks and pines, walking trails, and spectacular sunsets are just a few of the many things you can enjoy there. But some in the community feel that this special place is being tarnished by leftover trash and evidence of unruly behavior .

"I use that area sporadically," said Jim Murphy, a Daniel Island resident who lives nearby. "It’s gotten worse over the years (with) the teenagers over there…The whole area is really for the community and as it stands now everyone has a little fear of going over there, which upsets me. I’m concerned."

Blood Drive Set for July 23 at Providence Baptist Church

The summer months are a time for camp, vacations, and fun. The summer is also a great time to donate blood as the need is constant and the blood supplies are at critical levels during this time of year. On Wednesday, July 23 you will have an opportunity to do your part to help save three lives by donating blood!! Vacation Bible School at Providence

Vacation Bible School at Providence Baptist Church will be held July 28-31 from 9:30 a.m.-noon. This year’s theme is "Beach Party—Surfing Through the Scriptures." Make plans for your child to have a fun week with singing, games, crafts, and stories. There is a $20 per child registration fee. Children must have completed a 4K program or must have turned 4 before Sept. 1.To register, call the church office at 971-5275 or stop by the church at 294 Seven Farms Drive.

ADULT CPR CLASS

On Wednesday, July 23, an Adult CPR class will be offered at the Daniel Island Property Owner’s Office. This course will train and prepare participants to recognize and care for life threatening cardiac and respiratory emergencies in adults. The class will be held from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Class space is limited to six participants. This event is sponsored by the Daniel Island Community Fund and is free for Daniel Island residents. Lowcountry Explorers

Red Cross Baby-Sitting Class

The Red Cross Baby-sitting class will be held Saturday, July 26 from 10 a.m. -5 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church. The American Red Cross Baby Sitters Training course is for children between the ages of 11-14. Class size is limited to 12 students. The class is free to Daniel Island Residents (and is only available for Daniel Island Residents) as it is sponsored by the Daniel Island Community Fund. Students attending this need to pack a lunch. In addition, there is an optional child/infant CPR class from 5-9 p.m. on Friday, June 25 at Providence. You do not have to attend the CPR class but you do have to attend the class on Saturday to get your certification. ROTARY HOST FAMILIES NEEDED

The Daniel Island Rotary Club is currently looking for host families for the 2008-2009 school year. The club’s exchange student will be Catherine from Belgium. Her native language is French but she also speaks English. She is 17 years old and is actively involved in piano and ballet. She will be attending Bishop England. We are looking for a total of four families to keep her. This would be three families for three months each with one backup family. Also, please note that we are currently accepting applications to send Charleston students overseas for the 2009-2010 school year. The new season

Sports pages, magazine covers, ESPN and all its sub-stations, and sports radio talk show pundits are all talking or writing about football. One of our advertising sales people said to me yesterday that he is so pumped to see Clemson and USC football coverage dominating the sports section of the local daily paper. It's only July, but yes, it is football season.

While it is a little early, and still way too hot for me, I love football season. It conjures up for me cool weather, wearing sweatshirts, the smell of decomposing leaves and, yes, the can't-win-the-big-one-but-I-love-you-Philadelphia Eagles.

Psychiatric Treatment can save lives

Atlantic skies have been mercifully quiet thus far during this year’s hurricane season.
But the economic storm currently buffeting Lowcountry families could have profound psychological effects on people of all ages, according to Cherie Tolley, who is CEO of Palmetto Behavioral Health System (PBHS) in Charleston.

"As the economy worsens, no one is immune, no matter what their socio-economic status is," said Tolley. "Everybody is potentially having problems coping in their family or community right now with this tough economy. I anticipate that we could see a rise in suicide attempts and gestures along with an increase in substance abuse."

Community unites to help family displaced by mold

TOM RATZLOFF Volunteer Tom Liu and homeowner Joy Allen teamed up to clean mold off Allen’s bed last Saturday. Friends, neighbors and concerned residents turned out to help the Allen family salvage items from their mold-infested home.

Friends, neighbors and concerned residents raced gathering rain clouds to help a displaced Daniel Island family clean and salvage select items from their mold-infested home last Saturday morning.

Nine weeks ago physicians advised Ben and Joy Allen and their two young daughters to move out of their $419,900 D.R. Horton-built house at 100 Jordan Court after testing revealed apparent construction defects and elevated toxic mold levels. The precautionary move was made because Ben has multiple sclerosis and 3-year-old Madeleine has neutropenia, two conditions that can be exacerbated by mycotoxin exposure. Joy and Ellie, 4, have been healthy since living on Jordan Court. The Allens purchased their home in 2005.
