SAINT CLARE OF ASSISI CHURCH BUILDING UPDATE
A brand new church building for Saint Clare of Assisi Catholic Church on Daniel Island is one step closer to reality. On Aug. 20, the City of Charleston Design Review Board unanimously approved conceptual plans for the first phase of the project, which includes the placement of the building, parking, landscaping, sidewalks and orientation, as well as the exterior architectural aesthetic.

“The next step is for our plan to be reviewed by the Architectural Review Board (ARB) of Daniel Island,” stated Saint Clare’s building and design team in a recent newsletter to parishioners. “We expect that to occur within the next 30 days.”

A groundbreaking for the new church is anticipated for next summer, but a number of other tasks will take place before then – such as the selection of a civil engineering firm, the completion of the final design drawings, review and approval by the Diocese of Charleston, final City of Charleston and Daniel Island ARB approvals, final costing by contractors and acquisition of building permits.

“This may seem to be taking a long time but we are right about on schedule,” continued the building and design team. “We are being careful, systematic, detail-oriented, and prudent. We need to do this right the first time.”

DANIEL ISLAND CHIROPRACTIC CELEBRATES 16 YEARS

On August 9, Daniel Island Chiropractic celebrated 16 years of service on Daniel Island with a “Patient Appreciation Day.” According to Dr. Jimmy Smith, who has been at the helm of the practice since it opened, he and his staff enjoyed a “wonderful anniversary” while thanking their patients for their support over the years. The event also served as a fundraiser for Abby’s Friends, a non-profit organization that raises awareness and funds for advanced type 1 diabetes research and improving the lives of those the disease touches.

“We were able to see 67 patients and raised some funds for a very worthy cause,” said Dr. Smith. “We celebrated with breakfast and then served patients lunch and anniversary cake. We gave away gift cards to patients from Orlando’s Pizza, Daniel Island Grille, Blondies, and Dockery’s. We had fun with our awesome patients and hope they know how much we appreciate taking care of them. It was an awesome day!”

After the day’s festivities, the practice was able to make a $765 contribution to Abby’s Friends.

“We found out about Abby’s Friends several years ago after a patient’s daughter had been diagnosed with juvenile diabetes,” added Dr. Smith. “We were seeing the family and saw how this illness was affecting them. We love supporting foundations that we have a connection with. Abby’s Friends also started here on Daniel Island, and we wanted to support them in any way we can.”

MICHAEL’S BARKERY COMING TO CENTRAL ISLAND SQUARE

Another business has signed a lease in Central Island Square along Island Park Drive on Daniel Island. According to Lee & Associates Charleston, Michael’s Barkery will occupy 2,464 square feet of retail space at 864 Island Park Drive. Pete Harper, CCIM, and Will Sherrod, CCIM, of Lee & Associates, represented the landlord in the lease, and Steve Latour of Charleston Industrial represented the tenant.

The owners of the business are Scott and Karen Patrohay of Pennsylvania. The new shop, expected to open in April or May of 2019, will be a dog boutique that will also offer grooming services, as well as pet treats baked on site, noted Scott. The store is named after the Patrohay’s son, Michael.

“We have a special needs son, he is intellectually disabled,” added Scott. “And part of our intent with this is to employ him as well as other intellectually disabled people.”

The Patrohays lived on Daniel Island from 2000 to 2008 before moving to Pennsylvania. But they have maintained a second home on the island since 2014.

“We love Charleston and look forward to getting back to Daniel Island full-time.”
