New Mount Pleasant furniture showroom has DI connection

Daniel Island residents Anne and Stephen Jensen recently celebrated the grand opening of their new store – Matrix Kids Rooms – in Mount Pleasant. A ribbon cutting and private shopping event was held on September 30 to give customers a sneak peek at the company’s revolutionary kids furniture system. The store is located at 816 Johnnie Dodds Boulevard. It is the first retail showroom for parent company, Maxwood Furniture, Inc. The space will also serve as the company’s headquarters.

Maxwood was founded in 2004 by Stephen Jensen, a Danish furniture professional who relocated to the United States. His wife, Anne, a former global marketing executive, joined Maxwood as chief operating officer in 2014, when the couple moved to Charleston to further build their business.

“We’ve had several requests from customers to develop a store concept for our Matrix brand,” said Anne. “We fell in love with this area, and Mount Pleasant seemed like the perfect place to open our very first kid-friendly showroom where families can fully experience the Matrix line of products.”

The furniture system is designed to grow with children and is built from solid hardwood. Store hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, visit www.maxwoodfurniture.com.

‘Daniel Island Square’ coming to Island Park Drive

Another addition to Daniel Island’s changing commercial corridor is in the works. “Daniel Island Square,” a four-story mixed use building will be located at 880 Island Park Drive, in between the planned Daniel Island Performing Arts Center and Central Island Square (currently under construction). The cutting-edge project is being developed by Amplify LLC, a full service real estate developer, in response to what company officials describe as a high demand for office space on the island, as well as low availability.

According to the Amplify website, the building’s design will feature a “modern take on mill-style architecture.” The building will offer 33,000 square feet of office space on three upper floors. The first floor tenant, Dockery’s Restaurant, was announced in August. Other features will include modern amenities such as gigabit internet, outdoor work and leisure opportunities with balconies on every floor, and a shared covered community pavilion and public space for special events.

The developer is seeking a variety of tenants for the new space, including local and regional offices for large employers; professional services such as medical, legal and financial; as well as technology companies. It is expected that the project will bring 250 new destination driven jobs to Daniel Island.

“This new mixed use development will activate Island Park Drive both during the week and on weekends,” said Amplify’s Managing Director of Development Chad Colman. “With a great new restaurant and ample office space for 250 professionals, Daniel Island Square will benefit the residents and the existing island retail businesses and professional services. The plaza and pavilion will offer a unique outdoor experience for community events and gathering before and after theater performances.”

“Daniel Island Square represents how quality mixed use development benefits a community by activating the street year round while providing much needed office space to support our local businesses,” added Matt Sloan, president of the Daniel Island Company. “We are very excited about the evolution of Island Park Drive and the benefits that it will bring to the Town Center.” A groundbreaking for the building is expected to take place by the end of this year, said Colman, with an official opening slated for the fourth quarter of 2017.
