The Daniel Island News honored with journalism awards

The Daniel Island News was recognized with 15 awards for outstanding writing, reporting, design and photography at the annual meeting of the S.C. Press Association, held this past Saturday in Spartanburg. Each year the press association recognizes the best of South Carolina newspaper journalism in its news contest.

Elizabeth Bush and Kate Maas were awarded second place in Public Service for their series, “101 ways to improve our community.” Bush and Charlie Morrison were awarded third place in Public Service for their series on teens and substance abuse.

“I’m especially thrilled that our paper brought home two awards in the Public Service category,” said Publisher Suzanne Detar. “We strive to come up with ways to serve and improve our community and Beth, Kate and Charlie did just that in their writing and reporting.”

Bush also took home top honors in the Growth and Development Beat Reporting category, second in Faith Beat Reporting, and third in both Lifestyle Feature Reporting and in Business Beat Reporting.

Deb Bailey was awarded two second place awards, one for Health Beat Reporting and the second for her series of articles on “Digital Consumption.”

The entire Daniel Island News staff was awarded third place for Sports Special Section for its 2017 coverage of the Volvo Car Open. The special edition was titled “Volvo Car Open Action Amps Up!”

Graphic Artist Jan Marvin won second place in the Feature Page Design Portfolio, Single Sports Page Design and Photo Page Design categories.

Photographer Peter Finger earned second place honors in the Feature Photo and Sports Feature Photo categories and third place in the General News Photo category.

In addition to announcing the newspaper awards, the S.C. Press Association elected a new slate of officers. Jane Pigg, publisher of The Link in Cheraw, was elected president. Other officers elected were: P.J. Browning, publisher of The Post and Courier in Charleston, as daily newspaper vice president; Sue Detar, publisher of The Daniel Island News as weekly newspaper vice president; and Don Kausler Jr., regional editor of the Morning News in Florence, as treasurer.

The press association is 166 years old and includes the state’s 15 daily newspapers and 84 of its weekly newspapers.
