Tech Savvy Kids celebrates a decade of engaging and inspiring learning

Preparing children for the future and getting them excited about using 21st century skills is the mission at Tech Savvy Kids Club Preschool and STEAM Learning Center.

Founder Melissa Brown said, “We provide a non-traditional learning environment, and our STEAM curriculum offers a different unit every week that focuses on science, technology, engineering, art and math.”

Last June marked the 10th anniversary of the school, which has been at its location off Clements Ferry Road for six years.

Brown, who has been an educator for 29 years, taught kindergarten for eight years at Daniel Island School before venturing out on her own in 2009.

“I had an itch to make the transition to business owner,” she said. “I wanted more for our preschoolers and more for our families using our child care, and it was a good decision to make Tech Savvy what it is when we did.”

Currently 49 kids are enrolled at the center, ranging in age from infants, toddlers and preschoolers. Tech Savvy Kids also offers after-school care as well as camp throughout the summer.

Since it is not like a traditional preschool, there is a lot of hands-on learning.

“We measure, we make, they take things home,” said Brown.

The students engage in building with a variety of materials, art projects, movement and math, science-based stations, and the use of technology with computers, iPads and robots.

“Even our preschoolers are familiar with robotics,” she added. “We encourage them to be creators of their own inventions.”

Brown recently refurbished an old school bus into a colorful party on wheels. It’s officially known as the “Pop in, Play or Party Bus” and it is filled with activities, games, movies, and a glow area that is great for a dance party. She said it took nearly a year to transform the bus into the ultimate party space, and it can be easily customized to reflect the theme of the event.

Being centrally located on Clements Ferry Road has been a benefit, Brown said, since the child care facility is close to I-526 and close to where parents work and live.

“This year we’re happy to also include Spanish in our lessons,” Brown added. “It’s our goal to make everyone feel comfortable and included in our school.”
