DIS students take part in 'Ellis Island' experience at the Gibbes!
On Thursday, Nov. 15 the Gibbes Museum of Art recreated the Ellis Island experience for 134 Daniel Island School students. Students carried a card that matched five ship manifests, went through a medical inspection from a doctor looking for diseases, and some were quarantined. They only had one hour to do this, which is what the experience would have been like in 1907. The students learned about the immigration process and saw works in the museum from the early 1900s in conjunction with the museum’s current folk art exhibition.
