Learning at Cainhoy Elementary is for the birds, literally!

Educators from the Aviation Conservation Center: The Center for the Birds of Prey recently landed at Cainhoy Elementary.
The visit is just one layer of a year-long program made possible by a grant from BP that made visits from the center to wildlife sites and other learning experiences possible.
As a part of the grant and program, teachers are integrating knowledge of large birds into everyday STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) instruction.
On Jan. 23, a turkey vulture and black vulture were brought to the school to pair with second-grade lessons on vultures.
Prior to the visit, classes created vultures out of toilet roll crafts and then placed them on robots and coded them to act like one of the two vultures (because they have distinct flying styles).
This visit is just a small sliver of the program and one of many opportunities students will have to get up close and personal with large birds. The special program is funded by BP and more info can be found here: http://www.thecenterforbirdsofprey.org/support/year-of-the-bird/
