‘Calhoun’ is July’s top dog!
The July winner for the Dogs of Daniel Island photo contest is Calhoun, a handsome Chesapeake Bay Retriever! Visitors to the My Island Town Facebook Page fell in love with his patriotic attire and big brown puppy eyes. In addition to being spotlighted in this issue of The Daniel Island News and on social media platforms of the Daniel Island Property Owners Association (POA), Calhoun will receive his very own Daniel Island collar and lead set, available for sale at the Daniel Island Real Estate Information Center.
The POA recently caught up with Calhoun’s owner for a glimpse into the day-to-day life of our new furry friend:
How did Calhoun come to join your family?
Shortly after getting married, my husband and I decided we wanted to add a four-legged friend to our family. After doing a lot of research on various dog breeds, we decided on a Chesapeake Bay Retriever (crazy, we know). We got Calhoun from a small town called McBee, S.C. about a year ago. As soon as we saw him he ran right up to us and we fell in love. He has been the perfect addition to our family!
When/how did Calhoun come to be a dog of Daniel Island?
Calhoun became a dog of Daniel Island in March of this year when we moved from downtown.
What are some of Calhoun’s favorite ways to spend time on Daniel Island?
Calhoun’s absolute favorite thing to do on the island is play fetch and meet new friends at the dog park. He also enjoys going on walks around the island, visiting Lucia’s Premium Pets and joining us for meals at pet-friendly restaurants.
What do you like about having a dog on Daniel Island?
My favorite part about having a dog on the island is how pet-friendly it is. Everyone is very welcoming to dogs and there are many great trails and nice dog parks to enjoy.
What is Calhoun’s favorite treat, toy or game?
Calhoun’s favorite treat is sweet potato ropes and he is obsessed with balls…he will kick them around the house like a cat for HOURS. His favorite game is anything that involves water and fetching.

This picture of Calhoun was taken during the Independence Day celebrations at Smythe Park. This was also Calhoun’s first time around fireworks and he loved them! He sat right beside us and watched the whole show.
What’s the best tip you can give to others when submitting their photos for the Dogs of Daniel Island Photo Contest?
Don’t try to be too fancy. Just let your dogs be themselves!
How will Calhoun celebrate being July’s Dog of Daniel Island?
Calhoun will celebrate by playing with his friends at the dog park and enjoying some tummy scratches and a yummy treat after.
Is there a favorite story or fact about Calhoun that you’d like to share?
If you don’t already know, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers love water and Calhoun is no exception. He is lucky enough that both of his grandparents have pools. Calhoun has taught himself that he can stand up on his hind legs like a human in the pool and lay on floats. Now it is nearly impossible to get him out of the water!
