Art exhibit begins at Overture Daniel Island

Local artists display original artwork

Beautiful, swirling seas of turquoise on the carpet, luminescent orbs overhead. It is an artistic overture, an introduction to a different view of living.

Overture Daniel Island, the newly opened community for residents 55 and older, asked several island artists to participate in an artist showcase this Friday, Jan. 31, and Saturday, Feb. 1, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a reception on Thursday, Jan. 30, 5-7 p.m. It is the first of many planned events at Overture, curating a creative community.

“Where on Daniel Island do you live?” is a popular question to residents.

And “What kind of art do you create?” is frequently asked to artists.

That’s why Lifestyle Coordinator Marla Robinson said it’s important to choose artists from different areas of Daniel Island as well as different artist styles for Overture’s first show.

One artist who is very excited about this first show is Overture resident and watercolorist Bob Uhler.

Watercolorists need a vision because this method of painting requires masterful planning. Bob has lived the joy of seeing masterful planning come to fruition, both in his artwork and in his life on Daniel Island. Bob and his wife, Kay, moved into the 70th house on Daniel Island in 1998.

Like the landscapes Bob paints, the couple is nearly indigenous to Daniel Island. “We watched Bishop England be built, which was special for Kay since she attended BE when it was downtown years ago,” recalls Bob fondly.

Daniel Island was a blank canvas at the time, with the creative notion it would be a masterpiece. This place to live, work and play has been a dream realized for the couple and provided an abundance of compositional ideas for painting, including marshes, sunsets, and snowy egrets.

Bob’s work became artwork after retiring from his job as an aerospace engineer in 2003. He’s been involved in workshops and lessons ever since and is an active member of the Watercolor Society of South Carolina.

The Uhlers downsized over the years to stay in pace with their lifestyle, but stayed on Daniel Island for more than 20 years because “it’s a community, we spend time with friends and have lots of fun at different events.”

Similar to their first house on Brady Street, the Uhlers are among the first residents to move into Overture, which is located just beyond Kay’s alma mater.

“It’s turned out every bit as great as we had hoped it would be,” said Bob. “We have coffee here in the morning, wine in the evening and spend time together making friends.”

He’s excited to participate in the art show and introduce others to the newest outstanding community being created on Daniel Island.

Like many artists, Bob’s kids have put dibs on much of his work, but he will share his portfolio and will have some framed work for sale at the show.

Bob will be joined by Daniel Island artists Barbara Meierhusby, Amanda McLenon, Tina Kelly and Alicia Daily. Between them, watercolors, acrylic and oil painting mediums and pottery will be represented.

Black Tie co-owner Kris Manning, who is working with Robinson to bring art and music programs to residents of Overture, will also have her work on display and for sale.

The event is open to the public this Friday and Saturday, in the lobby at Overture, located at 7770 Farr Street.
