Boat landing work proceeding

Plans to create a public boat landing on the Wando River under the I-526 overpass on Daniel Island are still in the works. According to City of Charleston Councilman Gary White, permits from both the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDNR) have been approved.

Design documents on the project are expected to be prepared by SCDNR in June. Once complete, Berkeley County will operate the new boat landing and will be taking the lead on administration work, according to Dustin Clemens, deputy director of capital projects for the City of Charleston.

“This requires that Berkeley County be named the permittee and that a new funding agreement with Berkeley County be drafted,” stated Clemens in an email. “We are currently helping Berkeley County draft these letters so that the various grant funds can be verified before design begins this summer and the remaining permitting be pursued.”

Clemens estimates that construction is likely to begin in late 2017. The project has been in the works for over ten years and has experienced multiple delays.
