Charleston Gaillard Center: A 'must do' for DI residents

A state of the art performance hall and elegant event space in close proximity to Daniel Island makes the Charleston Gaillard Center a favorite among locals. From its ornate entrance to its impressive acoustics, the Gaillard is a treat for the senses.

An homage to Southern style is on display throughout the 1,800-seat performance hall and 15,000-square foot exhibition hall. Artistic images of sweetgrass and palmettos are peppered throughout the decorative columns and carpets.

Gaillard’s Director of Marketing and Public Relations Stephanie Shipe promises a one-of-a-kind experience for first timers.

“For newcomers to Daniel Island, the Charleston Gaillard Center provides a breathtaking place in the heart of Charleston’s historic district where they can experience world-class performances in a world-class venue,” she said.

A vibrant history and a cultural art community has always been a huge part of the Charleston’s appeal. For Daniel Island resident Suanne Trimmer it was a key factor in her move from Michigan.

“I’d heard of the Gaillard before moving to Daniel Island, and it contributed to our decision to move to the Charleston area because we wanted to live in a place that had quality cultural and entertainment options close by,” she explained. “I think it’s important to the residents of Daniel Island because the variety of quality performances offered for both adults and children allow the entire community to experience the thrill of live entertainment.”

The Gaillard Center also serves as an introduction to the arts for the community’s younger generation.

“We absolutely love the Gaillard Center,” added Daniel Island resident Mireille Mcquade. “It’s the perfect place for us to expose our kids to the various forms of performing arts in such a beautiful local theater.”

According to President and CEO of the Gaillard Steve Bedard, part of the center’s mission is to serve as an educational resource for the community.

“One of the things we are most proud of is our very robust educational outreach program that includes two full time educators,” noted Bedard, who is also a Daniel Island resident.

The goal of the Gaillard’s educational program is to remove barriers that limit access to the arts. Since reopening in late 2015 after a major renovation, the Gaillard has paid to transport around 60,000 students to the center, and it is one of the only art centers in the country that covers transportation costs.

Around 1,250 Daniel Island students have attended programs held at the Gaillard. The field trips cost $5 per student and are free for Title 1 students.

“The program was set up to make sure everybody has access,” added Bedard. “…We wanted to make sure that no young person would be left out because they were unable to afford it.”

The support of the community is vital to the continued success of the educational outreach program. To donate and learn more about upcoming performances and events, visit their website at https://gaillardcenter.org.
