City of Chas. begins assessment of Irma's damage on Daniel Island

City of Charleston crews were at work last week on Daniel Island to assess damage from Tropical Storm Irma.

A portion of the pier that connects to the floating dock near Children’s Park on the Wando River was washed away during the storm.

“It is our hope that it may be recovered, which would save the time and cost of purchasing a new one,” said Cameron Wolfsen, spokesperson for the City of Charleston.

Also impacted by rising tides were the walkways along the trail leading from Children’s Park to the Family Circle Tennis Center.

“As far as the walkways, we do not have a timeline for repairs at this point,” added Wolfsen. “We will need to hire consultants to perform a structural analysis and make a recommendation on the repairs that must be made. In the meantime, the portion of the walkway from the footbridges to the Children’s Park will be closed.”

According to a City of Charleston press release, a consultant hired to inspect the area and assess the damage has recommended the temporary closure citing structural concerns. Signs have been posted to inform visitors of the closures at the dock and footbridges, and barricades have been placed at each location. Until repairs are complete, the Daniel Island Waterfront Trail system should be considered an out and back trail.

The City is also requesting that residents submit reports about damage to personal property as a result of the storm to http://gis.charleston-sc.gov/irma/report-damage/.
