DI Holiday Decorating Contest

Break out the twinkling lights, reindeer displays, wreaths and bows! It’s time to deck your halls for the annual Daniel Island Holiday Decorating Contest, sponsored by the Daniel Island Garden Club. Judges will be touring the island on Sunday, December 11 and Monday, December 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. to scout the most festive holiday decoration displays in each neighborhood throughout the island.

“Driving around looking at Christmas lights was something my family did every year,” said Jean Winslett, a Daniel Island Garden Club member who will serve as one of the judges for the contest. “I love seeing all the lights and decorations. It’s fun to see how people change up their displays each year and to notice when someone has really stepped up their decorating.”

Once judging is complete, winners will be notified and homes will be announced in an upcoming issue of The Daniel Island News. Participants should ensure that all lights, animations, and decorations are in place and activated for the judging periods on both nights.

“Decorating for the holidays is a tradition many families enjoy each year,” added Winslett. “It’s a way to get into the Christmas spirit and to bring joy to our neighborhoods.”

Judging will be based on “curb appeal” as viewed from the street only. Therefore, only those decorations located on the street side of the property will be considered (corner lots will be judged from both streets). Judges will not enter the property to view back or side yards. Properties will be evaluated in three areas: unique design and creative use of lights and decorations; display and placement of decorations, animated objects, etc.; and overall presentation.
