FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the April 1, 2004 issue of The Daniel Island News the top news stories were about two new island restaurants – Potts Coffee and Sienna.

Potts Coffee was located on River Landing Drive (in what is today Sermet’s Courtyard). The restaurant was opened by Sherrie Potts, who explained at the time, “It will be an upscale coffee bar and gourmet café.” Coffee as well as breakfast and lunch were staples.

Also opening was the Italian restaurant Sienna, by Chef Ken Vedrinski. Sienna, now closed, operated from the location that now houses Ristorante Lidi. Vedrinski and Andy Selent brought to Daniel Island their new restaurant named for the Tuscan town, Sienna.

In other news, the city held an environmental program entitled “Kid’s Island Exploration”, with naturalist Andrew Gerhard at Bellinger Island. Gerhard led the group through a series of pollution experiments, lectures and games.

In school news, Bishop England presented the musical Grease.

The top feature story addressed the economic downturn, its impact on Daniel Island businesses, and what the community was doing to address it. A promising new partnership between the Daniel Island Business Association (DIBA), the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association (DINA), and the City of Charleston was offering some encouragement. In the wake of multiple business closings and an increased number of vacancy signs in the island’s commercial sector, the three entities teamed up to identify ways to help businesses survive and thrive in the challenging economy.
