FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the August 19, 2004 edition of The Daniel Island News, the cover and centerspread features spotlighted Daniel Island’s evolving architecture. The piece was written and photographed by the paper’s first college student intern, Julie Miano, who was a journalism major at Winthrop University at the time.

In top news, we reported that an 11-acre lake was being planned in an area that would be developed as Smythe Park. According to Bill McKenzie, vice president of development for the Daniel Island Company (now known as DI Development Company), the lake’s use would depend upon the homeowners and the Property Owners Association.

Photos of mild damage to Daniel Island from Hurricane Charley, which damaged a fence at Scott Park Pool and left palm debris along River Landing Drive, were also featured.

In the August 20, 2009 edition of the paper, it was reported that after a month-long search, a new principal was named for the Daniel Island School. Robert Candillo, who was previously the principal at Midland Park Elementary School in North Charleston, took over the school’s top administrative post.

The centerspread featured all the island restaurants, together with the results of a reader survey where readers shared their favorite island meals.

In sports, a photo of young angler Ritch Westbury, with the 30 pound dolphin fish he caught, was featured. Also, the Get Fit Challenge continued with participants dropping a total of 614 pounds!

Island Life photos included first day of school candids as well as the Garden Club’s yards of the month.

FIVE YEARS AGO

The centerspread article of the August 21, 2014 edition of the paper featured the plan for a new commemorative park on Daniel Island. It was to be located along the existing walking and bike trail that begins on Seven Farms Drive and winds around a picturesque pond next to the Volvo Car tennis stadium. Plans called for a meditative, circular memorial garden near the start of the trail, to include a “sugar kettle” fountain centerpiece and personalized benches. The Daniel Island Community Fund and the Daniel Island Rotary Club each committed to contribute $15,000 to the project, provided the community stepped in to support the effort as well.

In sports news, Bishop England head football coach John Cantey answered questions about the team’s upcoming season.

In political news, island resident Rindy Ryan announced her plans to run for the District 2 Berkeley County School Board seat.
