TEN YEARS AGO- Back to school issue!

The August 8, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News featured a “Back to School” theme. Daniel Island School principal at the time, Lori Dibble, had some important assignments to tackle over the summer months. She had to hire a full slate of new teachers, prepare for a growing number of students, and continue to build on the success the school had enjoyed since opening two years before. In 2008, the school would welcome close to 1,000 students through its doors, a substantial increase over the 543 who reported on opening day in 2006. “We’re spilling over into areas that we haven’t been in,” said Dibble at the time. “And it’s really exciting because it’s like when you’re increasing your family. You buy a house that’s got three empty bedrooms plus your master bedroom, and then you start having children and filling that up. It’s exciting when you see progress happen.”

Another story focused on school lunchbox ideas. How do you prepare a school lunch that’s nutritious—and will still get eaten? Here are a few ways to pack some love and nutrition into the lunchbox this year:

• Cheese kabobs: cut mild cheese into bite-size cubes and skewer on a straw

• Dried fruit, or a homemade trail mix combo of dried fruit and nuts

• Baked crackers with portable portion of peanut butter

• Flavored milk, water or 100 percent juice

• Homemade cookies or bars

• A surprise note with a cheerful message

FIVE YEARS AGO - Local residents meet Crime Prevention Team at National Night Out

The Charleston Police Department Crime Prevention Team hosted a “Meet and Greet” with Daniel Island residents in August as part of the 2013 National Night Out program. The gathering took place in the courtyard at Vespa Pizzeria.

The issue also featured different ways to enjoy hotdogs in the summer from the ballpark to the backyard. Feedback from a survey showed that our readers were health-conscious and nutritionally-minded, but also enjoyed a good hot dog every once in a while. Popular hotdog spots mentioned in Mt. Pleasant were Jacks Cosmic Dogs, Johnny’s and Skoogies. Closer to Daniel Island, the DIG got some love, too. But readers were eager to list another top spot to get a dog… Joseph P. Riley (RiverDogs) Stadium.
