FIFTEEN YEARS AGO
The theme of the February 12, 2004 edition of The Daniel Island News was keeping children safe. The issue included articles on dental care, sports injuries, childhood obesity, and prevention strategies.
Island life photos featured several pictures of kids and families at island parks.
Also in the news was an article about the “Daniel Island Divas,” a group of local women who organized to raise funds for first responders. Additionally, the issue included a page of reader suggested mast head logos for The Daniel Island News as part of a reader contest.
TEN YEARS AGO
The February 12, 2009 edition of the paper featured a collage of original photographs by our readers, submitted as part of our “What is Love?” photo contest.
Top news stories included: Dani Roof, a middle school math teacher, was named the Daniel Island School Teacher of the Year; a Daniel Island couple, Tammy Walker and John Holman, won a $30,000 wedding package from ABC News 4’s Lowcountry Live.
In sports, local youth soccer teams dominated.
FIVE YEARS AGO
The centerspread article in the February 13, 2014 issue of The Daniel Island News was titled “How life on an isle led to a trip down the aisle”… a true love story about island residents Reese and Bob Gately.
The top news stories included a recommendation by a 33-member committee, created by the Berkeley County School District, that a new school planned for Clements Ferry Road be for students in grades K-8. The issue also reported that the Cainhoy Plantation master plan and proposed zoning changes had earned initial approval from the City of Charleston Planning Commission by a vote of 7-1.
Also featured was a legislative update from former Rep. Jim Merrill.
