FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

The February 19, 2004 edition of The Daniel Island News featured a story about island businesses organizing the Daniel Island Business Association. Business owners and those interested in promoting the island had met twice and were in the planning stages of developing a business association.

In other news, Daniel Island merchants and businesses helped island residents celebrate Valentine’s Day by offering generous donations. Both children and adults were the beneficiaries – there was a Valentine’s Day party in Center Park and an adult-only Valentine’s Day dance on Saturday evening. The dance was organized by residents Walt and Barbara Jenner, marking the third anniversary of the event. In addition to dancing, the 52 guests enjoyed watching fellow residents compete in a Newlywed Game contest as well as a hula hoop contest.

TEN YEARS AGO

The February 19, 2009 edition of The Daniel Island News included a story announcing that the Daniel Island Company received two key permit approvals for its plan to construct a public waterfront and full-service marina on the island – the first from the Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District, which had been reviewing the permit request since early 2007; the second from the City of Charleston’s CCDRB (Commercial Corridor Design Review Board), which was reviewing the aesthetics and site placement. At the time, no construction start date was provided and the developer explained that construction would be determined by financing and the overall state of the real estate industry. The marina plans have since been scrapped and a new waterfront residential and retail community, with enhancements along the Wando River shoreline, is in the works.

FIVE YEARS AGO

In the February 20, 2014 edition of The Daniel Island News, a feature article paid tribute to Medal of Honor recipient Major General James Livingston. Livingston spoke to a full house at the Daniel Island Club as part of the Daniel Island Speakers Series put on by the Rotary Club of Daniel Island, the Daniel Island Business Association, the Daniel Island Community Fund, and the Daniel Island Club. “His 33 years of active duty include command of Company E’s Second Battalion Marines during the Vietnam War,” stated Commander Michael Cole, then executive officer of the Naval Consolidated Brig Charleston and a DI Rotary Club member, “where he distinguished himself above and beyond the call of duty and earned the Medal of Honor.”

Also in the news, former South Carolina Congressman Mark Sanford, joined by State Senator Larry Grooms, took in a tour of Daniel Island Academy. The visit was conducted in conjunction with the 15th anniversary of S.C. First Steps for School Readiness, a program further championed by former Governor Sanford in providing the state’s needy children with a full-day, state-sponsored early-childhood education experience.
