FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the Feb. 3, 2005, edition of the paper, the feature on the cover, centerfold, and Kids Say page involved hand writing styles and what handwriting reveals about personalities.

In school news, the Berkeley County School Board discussed the possible attendance lines for Daniel Island School, set to open in 2006. At the 2005 meeting, it was noted that only 110 Daniel Island students attend Hanahan schools. As a result of the high projections and the low number of Daniel Island students attending public school at the time, the superintendent noted that the attendance line for the new school would have to be fluid.

At the meeting ten years ago, the board heard data that by 2015, it was expected that 2,400 school-aged students would live on the island. Long-term estimates of developments on Clements Ferry Road (Beresford Creek, Beresford Hall, St. Thomas Point, the Peninsula, Beresford Commons, Wando Point, River Beach, and the Keystone Tract) included an additional 2,300 students.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the Feb. 4, 2010, edition of the paper, the cover featured a story about how a drug-related shooting and other suspicious activity in the Shell Ring community led neighbors to take steps to protect their neighborhood from crime.

In other news, Daniel Island Company’s Matt Sloan addressed the state of the island with the Daniel Island Business Association. He noted that the island fared well in comparison to other similar communities during the recession, but that Daniel Island continued to face a difficult real estate market, including residential foreclosures and a continued downward trend for commercial real estate.

In school news, for the first time in its four-year history, Daniel Island School met its federally mandated performance objectives established under the No Child Left Behind Act. The school hit all 21 of its Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) targets, earning teachers, staff and students a “passing” score.

FIVE YEARS AGO

The cover and feature article in the Feb. 5, 2015, edition of the paper focused on school cafeteria lunches. In 2010, President Obama signed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Act into legislation, which allowed for some improvement in nutritional standards in the National School Lunch Program. The new standards – which included calorie thresholds, as well as limits on sodium, sugar, and fats — were rolled out in 2014. After interviewing Daniel Island School’s cafeteria manager, it was reported that the school was already a step ahead of the guidelines and exceeded the National School Lunch standards.

Also in the news, Berkeley County School District was searching for a new superintendent since Dr. Rodney Thompson had recently resigned from the position.
