FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the January 8, 2004 issue of The Daniel Island News there was an article titled, “The Island Continues to Develop into a Town” by Matt Sloan. In the article, Sloan reflected on the real estate market on the island over the previous year (2003) and how sales far exceeded 2002’s record sales volume. He also added that several new developments would be coming in 2004, such as the Pierce Park Pool and the Smythe park neighborhood.

In other news, there was a list of book recommendations from First Lady Laura Bush, and a profile of the four South Carolina candidates running for U.S. Senate.

TEN YEARS AGO

The centerspread in the January 8, 2009 issue of The Daniel Island News featured an article about bald eagles. According to the article, the bald eagle is the largest raptor in South Carolina, with the exception of the rare golden eagle and the population in the state appeared to be increasing at the time, according to Midwinter Eagle Survey results from 2008.

Columnist Dalton Williams predicted the top news stories of 2004 in his annual humor report, which included “Major League Baseball cancels the 2009 season after discovering that all professional players are under contract with the New York Yankees” and “Responding to criticism that bailout monies had been focused too much on Wall Street, Congress approves a cash infusion for The Back Street Boys and, for good measure, throws in loans for Saks Fifth Avenue, Alley Oop and Nathan Lane.”

FIVE YEARS AGO

The theme of the January 9, 2014 issue of The Daniel Island News was high school basketball. The centerspread featured a profile of the Hanahan High School and Bishop England varsity girls’ and boys’ teams. The article included a Q&A from each of the head coaches about the year ahead.

Also in the news, Black Tie Music Academy moved into a larger space in the Publix Shopping Center, where they are located still today.
