FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

The January 15, 2004 issue of The Daniel Island News featured an article about an announcement from the Berkeley County School District that the Daniel Island School opening date would be moved back by at least one year. Construction that was originally scheduled to begin in early 2004 was delayed until spring as permit and other construction issues had to be settled. Parents had hoped to send their children to the school beginning in 2005, but would ultimately have to wait until the fall of 2006.

In another article, Governor Mark Sanford unveiled the first executive budget of his administration, a balanced, $5.1 billion, 301-page spending plan built around structural reform, efficiencies to the taxpayer, targeted prioritization of resources, sale of non-essential state assets, selected privatization, a dramatic reduction in annualizations and a commitment not to raise taxes.

In the January 15, 2009 issue of The Daniel Island News, readers were informed that the State Ports Authority (SPA) was forging ahead with plans to sell a portion of its 1300-acre tract on Daniel Island. Although the property, known as the Cooper River Tract, had not yet been put up for sale with a national real estate firm, SPA officials reported that plans to list the property were still on track. The SPA’s Cooper River Tract was originally intended to serve as the “transportation corridor” for a proposed massive Global Gateway Port on Daniel Island that was nixed in 2002 after strong local opposition to the project. In July of 2008, the Daniel Island Property Owners’ Association (POA) put forth of letter of intent to then SPA Board Chairman David Posek expressing the desire to purchase all of the port’s Daniel Island property for $25 million. The figure, based on the SPA’s historical cost of acquiring the land plus what the POA called a “reasonable profit,” was rejected by the port.

FIVE YEARS AGO

An article about the proposed Cainhoy Plantation was the centerspread in the January 16, 2014 issue of The Daniel Island News. The story documented two community gatherings related to the project.

The meetings were held so that the community could learn more about how a 9,000 acre site at the heart of their community would be developed.

“It’s part of the urban footprint already,” said Tim Keane, then director of the City of Charleston Planning, Preservation and Sustainability Department. “We have built public infrastructure here in support of that development. All of the water and sewer utilities already exist here…The public has decided this is a place for building in our region, so we have to move past that issue and say, ‘What form will it take?’”

The property is owned by the family of the late Harry Frank Guggenheim. Close to a third of the Guggenheim land has been sold off over the years. Of the remaining 9,000 acres, some 4,000 are protected wetlands, leaving approximately 5,000 acres for development.
