FIFTEEN YEARS AGO
 
In the Jan. 19, 2006, issue, several great historical sites were featured as part of the City of Charleston “Be a tourist in your own town” promotion. Included were stories about tourist attractions in Berkeley County: the Old Santee Canal Park and Mepkin Abbey.
Mepkin Abbey, now home to Trappist monks, is a great place to visit for history and natural beauty.
 
In development news, the Commercial Corridor Design Review Board gave final approval for construction of an apartment complex on Seven Farms Road and preliminary approval for an office building at 295 Seven Farms Road but denied conceptual approval for a hotel at River Landing Drive and Seven Farms Road.  
 
TEN YEARS AGO
 
In the Jan. 20, 2011, issue, the theme focused on island clubs and the benefits of participation. One club, the Lowcountry Explorers, was founded in May 2007 by island residents John and Pat Dietz. Inspired by a similar organization called the Natural History Club on Seabrook Island, about 15 people attended the first excursion, a trip to the Hunley submarine facility and Magnolia Cemetery. In 2011, there were over 200 people involved in the club, which still exists today.
 
In other island news, a Charleston builder was set to build 14 luxury townhomes on the Wando River, priced under $1 million each, near where the future marina was planned. The project fell through.   
 
FIVE YEARS AGO
 
In the Jan. 21, 2016, issue, the cover and centerfold reported the Berkeley County Council approved a $215 million infrastructure improvement program that included construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Daniel Island Drive and Seven Farms Drive, as well as enhancements to Clements Ferry Road and other road improvement initiatives across the county.
 
In school news, Harlem Globetrotter Anthony “Buckets” Blakes made a visit to the Daniel Island School and talked to middle schoolers about his ABC’s of Bullying Prevention campaign. 
 
In sports, Family Circle Tennis Center Annual Holiday Classic winners posed for photos after playing their matches. The event benefited the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.
