FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

The January 22, 2004 edition of The Daniel Island News featured stories on day jaunts around the area, including trips to The Hunley, Patriots Point, the Gibbes Museum of Art and the Charleston Museum. The stories were written by The Daniel Island News’ first college intern, an exceptional student from Lafayette College.

Also, in school news, in Education Week’s Quality Counts 2004 report, South Carolina received mixed reviews, but the state’s efforts to improve teacher quality were ranked the best in the country for a second straight year. The state also ranked seventh in the nation for raising academic standards and improving accountability.

TEN YEARS AGO

The January 22, 2009 edition of the paper carried a feature story titled “Help Wanted: DI residents and businesses impacted by troubled economy.”

Top news stories included a tornado disaster drill at the Daniel Island School and the creation of “Hello! Daniel Island,” a community organization whose goal at the time was to roll out the welcome mat for new residents. In sports, the Daniel Island recreational basketball programs and the Family Circle Cup were featured. There was also a full page photo spread of residents enjoying the annual community oyster roast.

FIVE YEARS AGO

With a “Home & Garden” theme in the January 23, 2014 issue of The Daniel Island News, the centerfold spotlighted local construction industry companies. Among those featured in the story were Budget Blinds and Southeastern Custom Homes. There was also an article about irrigation backflow units and the need to have them tested each year.
