TEN YEARS AGO – Residents raise concerns over beautiful Bellinger Island

A concern over Bellinger Island was a hot topic in the July 17, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News. Bellinger Island has long been a place for Daniel Islanders and their guests to take in the Lowcountry’s beautiful natural splendor. Pristine marshlands, a winding tidal creek, a lush wooded glen of oaks and pines, walking trails, and spectacular sunsets are just a few of the many things you can enjoy there. But some in the community felt at the time that the place was being tarnished by leftover trash and evidence of unruly behavior. In addition to issues relating to trash, another topic generating much discussion was safety. A large oak tree on the bank of Beresford Creek was home to a popular rope swing frequently used by youth. Charleston Police Department responded to residents’ concerns with a promise to step up patrols of the area.

Also in the news was an article about how the City of Charleston’s Department of Planning, Preservation and Economic Innovation was sponsoring a workshop for the Daniel Island business community and for others interested in owning or establishing a business in the business district of Daniel Island.

Former Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. said, “The business district on Daniel Island is an exciting and dynamic place to do business. Our goal is to offer to existing and proposed businesses some of the tools they may need for a successful business. This will be a great opportunity for those who have dreamed of owning their own business to get some tips for making their dream come true.” The Daniel Island Business Association was instrumental in organizing that event.

FIVE YEARS AGO – Historic Parish of St. Thomas and St. Denis awarded preservation grant

The July 18, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News featured an article about the historic Parish of Saint Thomas and Saint Denis in Berkeley County. Back in 2013, the national society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) donated $8,950 to restore and preserve the historic church. Funding for this project was made possible through the sponsorship of the Rebecca Motte Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, located in Charleston. The Parish Church of Saint Thomas and Saint Denis, though no longer an active parish, falls under the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, led by Bishop Mark Lawrence at the time, and is generally maintained by the Church of the Holy Cross, Sullivan’s Island and the Society of Saint Thomas and Saint Denis, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to preserve the historic church and its outbuilding.
