FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the July 22, 2004 edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold featured articles about spiritual retreats. Local writers described their experiences at Mepkin Abbey, a community of Roman Catholic monks established in 1949 and located on the Cooper River just north of Charleston; and at the St. Christopher Conference Center, which encompasses 300 acres on Seabrook Island, is run by the Episcopal Church Diocese of South Carolina, and provides comfortable and affordable facilities for youth and adult groups, as well as a private retreat for individuals, couples and families.

In other news, it was reported that island baritone Benjamin Lee would give an opera performance at Providence Baptist Church.

In sports, the Daniel Island Flying Fish finished 23rd in their first City Meet.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the July 23, 2009 edition of the paper, it was reported in business news that Japan Karate Institute extended their lease for five years.

In other news, a group of condominium owners residing at 254 Seven Farms Drive – a complex comprised of over 170 condo units – raised concerns that a non-profit organization, Faith Haven, was taking actions in violation of their association’s covenants in regards to providing housing for the organization’s participants in a sober living program.

In school news, an article addressed the search for a new principal at Daniel Island School. Lori Dibble, who had served at the school’s helm since the summer of 2007, announced she would be leaving to accept a new position as principal of Summerville Elementary School. It marked the third time in four years that the top administrative position at the school was vacant. Dibble took over the post from Carolyn Morris, who stayed in the position just one year after opening the K-8 school in 2006.

The centerfold feature included survey results concerning whether Daniel Island residents should favor Daniel Island businesses. Over 90 percent of readers said that “yes,” where possible, area residents should make a special effort to support island establishments.

FIVE YEARS AGO

The theme of the July 24, 2014 edition of the paper was college savings. There were several articles that focused on saving for college and another with tips for applying for financial aid and student loans.

In other news, former Governor Nikki Haley announced that the Daniel Island Annexation Commission had officially been dissolved, leading state legislators to be given the task of updating the antiquated laws that prevented the group from completing its work in a cost effective manner.

In island life, news of several thefts from unlocked cars and vandalism on island trails was also reported.
